Hailing from Udaipur, Rajasthan, Captain Shiva Chauhan's journey is a testament to determination and resilience. She lost her father at the age of 11, after which her mother ensured she received a quality education while encouraging her ambitions.
After completing her schooling in Udaipur, Shiva earned a BTech in Civil Engineering from Techno NJR Institute of Technology in 2020. Inspired from a young age to join the Indian Armed Forces, she prepared for the Short Service Commission (Technical) entry and secured All India Rank 1 in the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview at Allahabad in March 2020.
Following rigorous training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, she was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers in May 2021 and later became part of the Indian Army's Fire and Fury Corps.
PROVING HER METTLE
Captain Chauhan quickly established herself through her professionalism and endurance while serving in the challenging terrain of Ladakh.
In July 2022, on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, she led the Sura Soi Cycling Expedition, covering nearly 508 kilometres from the Siachen War Memorial to the Kargil War Memorial over 11 days through high-altitude mountain roads. The expedition showcased her exceptional physical and mental strength and earned her recognition within the Army.
Her performance led to her selection for operational deployment in Siachen. Before being posted, Captain Chauhan underwent a month of intense training at the Siachen Battle School, alongside fellow officers and soldiers.
The demanding course included endurance training, ice wall climbing, glacier movement, avalanche response, crevasse rescue, survival drills and operations in low-oxygen conditions. Only personnel who meet stringent medical and operational standards are cleared for deployment in one of the harshest environments on Earth.
CREATING HISTORY
After successfully completing the training, Captain Shiva Chauhan was inducted onto the Siachen Glacier on January 2, 2023, following an arduous climb. She became the first woman officer of the Indian Army to be operationally deployed at Kumar Post, a milestone announced by the Fire and Fury Corps.
Leading a team of Sappers, she was entrusted with crucial combat engineering responsibilities, including providing engineering support in one of the world's most extreme operational environments.
