NTA income doubles in five years, crosses Rs 1,100 crore in 2023-24
The National Testing Agency's income and expenditure have increased sharply over five years, according to data tabled in Rajya Sabha. The figures come amid renewed focus on examination reforms and accountability.
The National Testing Agency’s (NTA) income has more than doubled in five years, rising from Rs 504.16 crore in 2019-20 to Rs 1,116.84 crore in 2023-24, according to data shared by the Centre in Parliament.
The figures were presented by Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar in the Rajya Sabha while replying to questions on the functioning of the examination agency. The data was part of the NTA’s Income and Expenditure Account prepared under the Accrual Accounting System and approved by its Governing Body.
The agency’s expenditure also increased during the period, moving from Rs 440.20 crore in 2019-20 to Rs 1,040.96 crore in 2023-24.

The data shows that the agency’s income remained around Rs 500 crore between 2019-20 and 2021-22. However, a sharp increase was recorded in 2022-23, when income rose to Rs 900.56 crore, followed by another jump in 2023-24.
FROM EXAMS TO CRORE-WIDE OPERATIONS
The Centre also informed Parliament that since its establishment in 2018, the NTA has conducted more than 270 examinations with over 6.6 crore candidate registrations.
In 2026 alone, the agency conducted 12 examinations, registering more than 65 lakh candidates.
To manage its operations, the NTA currently has 39 permanent posts, all filled through deputation. It also engages 73 contractual personnel and outsources 124 staff members to support examination activities across the country.
DATA COMES AMID EXAM TRUST DEBATE
The financial details come at a time when the NTA has faced questions over examination management following allegations of irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 examination. The issue led to student protests demanding stronger safeguards, transparency and accountability in competitive exams.
The Centre has since announced measures to strengthen the examination system. The NEET-UG re-examination was conducted in June, and the revised results were released recently.
