Mangaluru woman hacked to death by relative at bus stand, cops suspect one-sided love

A 23-year-old woman was attacked with a machete allegedly by a relative at a bus stand in Bantwal in Karnataka's Mangaluru district on Thursday evening. While the attacker fled in a car, the woman was rushed to a government hospital, where she died. Police suspect that the woman's turning down of a proposal had provoked the attacker.
The victim, Lavanya, was from Kakyapadavu, a village in Dakshina Kannada district. She worked at a private nursing home in the nearby town of Kalladka, and was waiting at a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bust stop when the accused pulled out the machete from his bag and attacked her.
A video of the attack shows the assailant striking the women multiple times.
According to the preliminary investigation, Lavanya attempted to flee after the accused approached her. But before she could escape, the accused attacked her and fled from the spot.
Police have identified the accused as Chetan, who is reportedly a distant relative of the deceased. Investigators suspect the attack was driven by one-sided love, alleging that the accused had been obsessively pursuing the victim.
Police on Friday arrested Chetan from Mangaluru, according to Prajavani's website.
On Thursday, Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Arun Kumar said the incident took place at the KSRTC bus stand in Bantwal, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Bantwal Town Police Station.
"About 20 minutes ago, an incident occurred at the KSRTC bus stand in Bantwal, which falls under the jurisdiction of Bantwal Town Police Station. A young woman, around 25 years of age, was waiting for a bus when a young man allegedly came and attacked her with a machete before fleeing the spot," Kumar said.
He added that people present at the scene immediately shifted the woman to a government hospital for treatment.
The SP said special police teams have been formed to quickly identify both the victim and the accused, and efforts are underway to expedite the investigation.
Police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation into the incident.
