Jharkhand woman throws 2 daughters into well, jumps in; they die, she survives

A woman in Jharkhand's Palamu district allegedly threw her two daughters into a well after a domestic dispute and then jumped in. Villagers rescued her, but the two children couldn't be saved.

A woman allegedly threw her two young daughters into a well and jumped in after them following a domestic dispute in a village in Jharkhand's Palamu district. Both children died, while the woman was rescued by villagers.

According to police, the incident occurred in Kanda village on Wednesday night. The suspect was identified as Sarita Devi, wife of Chhote Lal Prajapati, a local labourer.

As per the preliminary probe, an argument broke out between the couple on Wednesday evening. Following the dispute, Sarita Devi allegedly took their two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Dolly, who was sleeping in her grandmother's lap, and threw her into a nearby well. She then threw her second daughter, 4-year-old Priya, into the well.

Sarita Devi then attempted to cast her third daughter, 6-year-old Sushma, into the water, but the child resisted and screamed for help. The women abandoned the attempt and jumped into the well herself, police said.

Villagers alerted by the child’s cries rushed to the scene and pulled Sarita Devi from the well. The two younger children could not be saved.

A local police official said an FIR has been registered in connection with the incident. Sarita Devi has been arrested, and authorities are in the process of remanding her into judicial custody.

Autopsies on the two children were conducted on Thursday morning at the Medinirai Medical College and Hospital. Police said an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the dispute and the deaths is ongoing.
