Paresh Rawal says Akshay Kumar's OMG 2 was his concept but he wasn't credited
Actor Paresh Rawal has claimed that the story that became OMG 2 began as an idea he developed with director Amit Rai. He said the film later changed course, and he was not credited for the original concept.
Actor Paresh Rawal has claimed that the story that eventually became OMG 2 began as an idea he developed with director Amit Rai, and said he was not given credit for the story or concept. The actor also said the project changed substantially after actor Akshay Kumar became involved, leading him to step away from the film.
Paresh, in an interview with Vickey Lalwani, for his YouTube channel said that his original version was a father-son drama dealing with sex education, public humiliation and a parent’s fight for justice. He said it did not feature God or any other divine character, and was never conceived as a direct sequel to OMG.
The saddest part, according to Paresh, was not being acknowledged for the original premise. “The saddest part is that I wasn’t even given credit for the story or the concept. My name wasn’t mentioned anywhere,” he said.
The actor also claimed that several industry figures knew where the story had originated. “Amit, Akshay, Ashwin, Ajay Devgn, Karan Johar and Salman Khan all know it was my idea and my story. Ajay and Salman probably said no because of the subject. They thought it could become controversial. I tried explaining the concept to them,” Paresh added.
Paresh recalled approaching director Amit Rai, whose Road to Sangam he admired, with the initial premise. Paresh highlighted that the story centred on a schoolboy whose private act is recorded and circulated, leaving him socially ostracised, with his father trying to defend him and challenge the shame imposed on the child.
The 71-year-old revealed that Akshay later approached him to act in the film, but he refused because he no longer recognised it as the story he had helped develop.
“I spoke to Akshay. He asked me to do the film. I told him, ‘No. This isn’t the film I had envisioned. There is no role of God in this story.’ He tried to convince me, but I had lived with the script from the beginning. I knew exactly what it was supposed to be. That’s why I walked away,” he said. Pankaj Tripathi eventually played the father, while Akshay appeared as “Shiv ka Doot”.
Released in 2023, OMG 2 faced significant scrutiny from the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) over its mix of sex education and religious imagery. It was eventually cleared with an A certificate after multiple modifications, including presenting Akshay’s character as a divine messenger rather than Lord Shiva.
