Directed by Atlee, Mersal featured Vijay in a triple role, portraying a father and two sons. The film follows Maaran, a compassionate doctor who charges patients only a nominal fee but secretly operates as a vigilante magician exposing corruption and malpractice within the medical industry. Following his arrest, shocking revelations about his past begin to unfold.

The film boasted an ensemble cast including Samantha Ruth Prabhu, SJ Suryah, Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen, Vadivelu, Hareesh Peradi, Kovai Sarala, Sathyan and Sathyaraj.

Mersal marked Vijay's second collaboration with Atlee after the success of Theri. The actor-director duo later reunited for Bigil, further cementing their successful partnership. Produced by Thenandal Studio Limited as the banner's landmark 100th production, the film featured music by AR Rahman, cinematography by GK Vishnu and editing by Ruben.

Despite becoming a commercial success, Mersal was not without controversy. Magician Raman Sharma had criticised the makers, accusing them of unethical practices while promoting a film centred on ethics.

Released on October 18, 2017, during Diwali, Mersal opened to largely positive reviews. While some critics pointed to its lengthy runtime and familiar storyline, audiences embraced the film, helping it earn close to Rs 200 crore at the global box office. The Vijay-starrer also made headlines for becoming the first Tamil film to release in China.

With Jana Nayagan's release date yet to be confirmed, the re-release of Mersal offers fans an opportunity to celebrate Vijay's birthday festivities in theatres. The much-anticipated H Vinoth directorial is expected to be the actor-politician's final film as he has shifted his focus entirely to public service and politics after becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
