Director Sanjay Gupta says Prithviraj's production model can solve Bollywood's woes
Sanjay Gupta believes Prithviraj Sukumaran's backend payment model could solve many of Bollywood's long-standing financial challenges.

Director Sanjay Gupta believes Bollywood could solve many of its financial problems by following Prithviraj Sukumaran's production model. Praising the Malayalam star's approach, Gupta said actors should consider taking backend returns instead of charging their full fee upfront.
In a post on X on Tuesday, Sanjay Gupta highlighted how Prithviraj, who produces many of his films under Prithviraj Productions with his wife, Supriya Menon, opts for backend returns instead of charging an upfront acting fee. He wrote, "Malayalam superstar Prithviraj produces most of his own films because — by his own admission — his fee is usually the biggest cost on the budget. So he takes it off the table, swaps it for backend & suddenly the film is affordable, safe & viable."
He further added, "Shouldn't this just be the norm? Half the industry's so-called 'problems' would quietly disappear if more stars did this instead of talking about it on panels."
Prithviraj's production model has allowed him to exercise greater creative control while making his films financially less risky. Through Prithviraj Productions, he has backed several projects, including the banner's debut production, 9 (Nine), an experimental science fiction thriller that the actor was passionate about.
Sanjay Gupta has frequently voiced his opinions on issues affecting the Hindi film industry. During the recent controversy surrounding Ranveer Singh and the Federation of Western India Cine Employees' reported ban on the actor over Dhurandhar, Gupta appeared to support Ranveer in a post, writing that banning an A-list star ultimately affects the livelihoods of over 300 crew members working on a film set. He has also shared a cryptic post that was widely perceived as a criticism of Kohrra Season 2.
On the work front, Prithviraj has a packed slate of upcoming projects, including i, Nobody, Varanasi, Khalifa, Daayra and Odiyan. Supriya Menon is also among the producers of i and Nobody, while Daayra, co-starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, recently locked its release date.
