Rajinikanth says criticism follows whether he speaks or stays silent

Superstar Rajinikanth, at the launch of his upcoming film Dharmam, hit back at his critics as they continue to scrutinise him for his silence and whenever he chooses to speak. The 75-year-old actor talked about the constant scrutiny that follows him, saying that he learnt that criticism is unavoidable quite recently. Speaking at the event in Chennai, Rajinikanth said he now feels hesitant whenever he is invited to deliver a speech because his words often become a topic of discussion.

Pesa azhaikarom nu sonnale thayakkama iruku. En na naa pesinaale problem — onnu enaku problem illa ungaluku problem (The moment someone says they are calling me to speak, I feel hesitant. Because whenever I speak, it becomes a problem — either for me or for you),” he began his speech.

The actor said that staying quiet also invites criticism, with people questioning why he is not speaking up. “Naa summa irundha, ivan enna pesave maatrangaranga, vaai la enna kozhukattai vechikaara nu galatta pannuvanga (If I stay quiet, they will make fun of me saying, ‘Why isn’t he speaking? Has he kept a kozhukattai (a sweet delicacy or modak) in his mouth?’),” he said.

However, when he does speak, he added, people often question his statements or argue that he should not have spoken about a particular issue. He then said, "If I speak, some will say, ‘Why did he speak now?’ Others will say he shouldn’t have spoken at all."

Reflecting on his decades-long journey in the public eye, Rajinikanth said he has come to understand that people’s opinions are often shaped by their personal feelings towards someone.

Romba naal kazhichi therinjikiten, nammala pudikadhavangaluku namma enna senjaalum pudikaadhu. Pudichavangaluku namma enna senjaalum pudikum nu ninaikardhu muttal thanam (After many years, I have understood one thing — people who don’t like us will not like us no matter what we do. And thinking that people who like us will like everything we do, whatever we do, is foolish. One has to be careful.),” he said.

He added that expecting everyone to approve of one’s actions is unrealistic and that people must learn to be cautious.

In the recent past, Rajinikanth has been subjected to heavy trolling either for his political stance or his meet-ups with political leaders, even if they were just courtesy meets.

On the work front, Rajinikanth is all set to commence shooting for his upcoming film, Dharman, from Thursday. He has director Nelson's Jailer 2, which is expected to release in a few months. Meanwhile, the actor's film with Kamal Haasan, directed by Nelson, is expected to go on floors in 2027.
