Varanasi to ancient Rome: SS Rajamouli reveals film's globe-trotting journey
Director SS Rajamouli talked about Varanasi's ambitious world, confirming the Mahesh Babu-starrer will travel from Varanasi to ancient Rome through a time-bending adventure. The film will release in theatres on April 7, 2027.
Director SS Rajamouli has finally offered fans a deeper look into the world of Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran. While excitement around the globe-trotting adventure has been building ever since the title glimpse was unveiled, the filmmaker has now revealed that the story will take audiences across continents – and even back in time to ancient Rome.
In an exclusive interview with a European magazine, Tsounami, Rajamouli shared that Varanasi follows an ambitious journey that begins in the holy city of Varanasi before travelling to Antarctica, Africa and eventually ancient Rome through a time-travel narrative, before returning to Varanasi.
"We shot a video about what the audience will experience and what they can expect, without revealing anything about the story. It travels from Varanasi to Antarctica, even Africa, and into the past, to Rome, before finally returning to Varanasi," Rajamouli said.
The filmmaker clarified that the previously released title glimpse was never intended to explain the film's plot. Instead, it was designed to give audiences a sense of the scale, visual ambition and cinematic experience the film promises while keeping the narrative under wraps.
Rajamouli also shared an update on the production, revealing that nearly 80 per cent of the film has already been completed. According to him, the remaining portions mainly consist of smaller scenes, with most of the large-scale action sequences already wrapped up.
"We've shot about 80 per cent of the film; the other 20 per cent is in progress. But we've finished the biggest action scenes. We still have the smaller scenes and everything in between," he said.
He further explained that post-production is progressing simultaneously with filming. Every completed sequence is immediately edited and sent to the visual effects team, allowing different departments to work in parallel and keep the production on schedule.
