Maa Inti Bangaaram director Nandini Reddy said she regrets not finishing Satluj before its removal from ZEE5.

Telugu filmmaker Nandini Reddy has spoken in support of Honey Trehan’s Satluj, the Diljit Dosanjh-starrer that was recently released on ZEE5 and taken down within two days. Reddy, who recently directed Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s Maa Inti Bangaaram, said the film had such a strong impact on her that she stopped it before the final 30 minutes and was unable to finish it because of the trauma it caused, hoping to continue the next day.

Her remarks came as reactions to the much-delayed film continued online following its takedown. Reddy shared posts on Instagram Stories on Monday, including a video of people in Punjab gathering for a public screening and another video from an Instagram user who had predicted the film would be removed soon after release.

In one of the posts shared by Reddy, the Instagram user wrote, “Watch this ASAP. This is undoubtedly one of the greatest movies of Modern times. The performance Of Diljit Dosanjh and Entire cast will blow your mind. Special Mention to Savinderpal Vicky .. He is phenomenal. Watch it guys as soon as possible before it getting ban.”

Reposting the video on her Instagram Stories, Reddy wrote that she had paused the film because of the trauma it conveyed. She said, “Started watching this stunning film .... Stopped before the last 30 minutes to take a break and watch it the next day because I was so hit by the trauma in it .... I wish i had completed it.”

She also praised director Honey Trehan and actor Diljit Dosanjh, adding, “If we don't have the spaces to tell the truth no matter how painful then what is the meaning of freedom in this country .. more power to you @diljitdosanjh @honeytrehan (sic).”

Zee5 statement after takedown

Zee5 issued a statement on Sunday evening after the film was removed, but did not give a reason for the decision. The platform said, “In light of the current developments, Satluj will be unavailable in India until further notice. We remain committed to exploring every appropriate avenue through due process to bring the film back to our audiences at the earliest opportunity.”

As pirated versions of the film began circulating on social media, Zee5 also said, “We are doing our bit to bring Satluj back. Please do yours – don’t support piracy.” On the day of the film’s release [July 3], Diljit had said that he expected it to be taken down on Monday [July 6]. After it was removed, he urged people to download and watch it.

What the film is about

Satluj tells the story of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra and follows his discovery of police atrocities and the killing and illegal cremation of 25,000 people. The film’s brief run on Zee5, its removal within two days and the reactions that followed have kept it at the centre of discussion.
