Heavy rain ahead: Monsoon to shift focus to North, East India on Sunday
A weakening weather system and an active monsoon trough continue to work together, setting the stage for another day of widespread showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds across several parts of the country.
Rainfall activity is expected to remain active across large parts of the country on Sunday, August 2, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rain over several states in northern, eastern, western and southern India.
The latest forecast comes as the well-marked low-pressure area over southeast Rajasthan continues to affect the monsoon, although it is expected to weaken into a low-pressure area over the next 24 hours.
The weather system, along with the active monsoon trough stretching across northern India, is expected to keep conditions favourable for widespread showers over many regions through the weekend.
HEAVY RAIN LIKELY IN MULTIPLE STATES
According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over coastal parts of Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe, Rajasthan, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on August 2.
Heavy rainfall is also forecast at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Goa, parts of Maharashtra, Odisha and Uttarakhand.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are likely over several parts of the country.
Several parts of Karnataka may experience thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph, while parts of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand and West Madhya Pradesh could see gusts of up to 50 kmph during thunderstorms.
