The IMD has forecast advancing monsoon rains, thunderstorms and heatwave pockets across India on Tuesday, but it will be slow.

India is expected to witness a mix of advancing monsoon rains, severe thunderstorms and lingering heatwave conditions on Tuesday, June 16, as multiple weather systems remain active across the country, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

One of the biggest weather developments is the continued progress of the southwest monsoon. After advancing into the remaining parts of Andhra Pradesh and more areas of Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal on June 15, conditions remain favourable for further advancement into additional parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and central India over the next few days.

Heavy rainfall is likely to remain concentrated over northeastern India and the eastern Himalayan foothills. IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.

This wet spell is expected to persist for at least the next six to seven days, raising the possibility of localised flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.

Thunderstorm activity is expected to remain widespread across northwestern and central India. Parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are under alert for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. Wind speeds could reach 50-70 kmph in some locations, while isolated dust storms may continue over western Rajasthan.

Delhi-NCR and adjoining regions may also experience thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds under the influence of a seasonal trough extending from Punjab to Bihar and several upper-air cyclonic circulations over northern and central India.

Meanwhile, heatwave conditions are likely to persist over isolated pockets of Telangana and Vidarbha for the next two to three days. Residents in these regions have been advised to avoid prolonged exposure to the afternoon sun and remain hydrated. Hot and humid weather is also expected over parts of coastal Karnataka, Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra.

The weather is being influenced by a combination of monsoon circulation, cyclonic systems over central India, a trough extending across the Indo-Gangetic plains and a western disturbance affecting the western Himalayan region. These systems are creating favourable conditions for thunderstorm development and enhanced rainfall activity.

Temperature-wise, maximum temperatures are expected to rise gradually by 2-4 degrees Celsius over northwest India until June 18, while no significant change is likely over most other parts of the country.

With the monsoon steadily advancing and multiple weather systems interacting across the subcontinent, Tuesday is expected to bring a dynamic mix of rain, storms and heat across different regions of India.
