No more heatwave headlines: Monsoon strengthens, rain to drench India on Saturday
The IMD has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds across several states as the southwest monsoon remains active through the first week of July.

The southwest monsoon is set to remain vigorous across large parts of the country over the next few days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and isolated spells of extremely heavy rain over central and eastern India on Saturday.
According to the IMD, West Madhya Pradesh and Odisha are likely to witness extremely heavy rainfall on Saturday, July 4.
Meanwhile, several other regions, including East Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and Rajasthan, are expected to receive heavy to very heavy showers through the weekend.
The active monsoon is also expected to bring gusty winds and lightning to many parts of the country.
In essence, the monsoon has completely arrived, and is forecast to bring strong winds and rain, washing away the memory of the extremely hot summer regions endured.
RAIN ALL AROUND
The weather agency said the monsoon remains active over central, northwest and eastern India, supported by favourable atmospheric conditions that are driving moisture-laden winds inland from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
In northwest India, many regions are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next week.
This will include Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.
Isolated heavy rainfall is forecast over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and eastern Rajasthan, raising the possibility of waterlogging, localised flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.
Delhi is expected to witness a generally cloudy sky with intermittent rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds, keeping daytime temperatures around 30-32°C and providing relief from the recent spell of heat and humidity.
THUNDERSTORMS, RAINS AND LIGHTNING
Apart from heavy rain, the IMD has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-60 kmph across several parts of north, central and eastern India.
Isolated areas of west Rajasthan may witness thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 70 kmph, along with duststorm activity.
The weather agency has advised residents in regions under heavy rainfall warnings to remain alert, as intense downpours can trigger flash flooding, waterlogging, poor visibility and traffic disruptions.
The southwest monsoon, which has now covered the entire country, is expected to remain active through the first week of July.
The widespread and sustained rainfall will benefit agriculture and improve water availability after the scorching summer conditions.
The monsoons everyone had been waiting for is here.
