21 golds in stunning late rush: India finish Asian Games with 85 medals in Japan
Asian Games 2026: India finished its campaign with 85 medals after the men's hockey team won gold on Saturday, October 3. The tally was 21 medals fewer than the 2022 edition. Here are the key numbers from Team India's campaign in Aichi-Nagoya.

India's Asian Games campaign ended on a golden note as the men's hockey team beat Malaysia 5-1 in the final on Saturday, October 3. It was India's 21st gold medal and 85th overall, securing another top-five finish at the quadrennial multi-sport event.
India's overall medal tally fell by 21 from the previous edition, while the gold-medal count was down by seven compared to the 2022 Hangzhou Games. India had won 106 medals in Hangzhou, crossing the 100-medal mark for the first time. The Aichi-Nagoya campaign was a mixed bag, with some expected results giving way to disappointments before a strong finish changed the complexion of the campaign.
There was, however, plenty of credit in India's late medal rush. As recently as Thursday, India were outside the top 10 in the medal table with just 10 gold medals. But over the final two days, the hockey and cricket teams delivered gold, while India also enjoyed spectacular results in archery, boxing and wrestling. The late surge brought 11 more gold medals and propelled India into the top five, giving the campaign a much-needed lift before the Games drew to a close.

BIG DIPS: WHERE THE MEDALS WERE LOST
- The biggest medal dips came in shooting and athletics, which together accounted for 12 of the overall 21 fewer medals compared to 2022.
- Shooting fell from 22 medals in Hangzhou to 15 in Aichi-Nagoya, with its gold tally dropping from seven to three, while athletics went from 29 medals to 24 and saw an even sharper fall in golds, from six to one.
- Rowing also suffered a significant decline, dropping from five medals to one, while badminton fell from three to one.
- India did not win medals in tennis and equestrian, after winning two medals in each sport in 2022.
- Chess, meanwhile, was not part of the 2026 Asian Games programme, so it does not count as a medal dip. S
- quash was an exception in terms of overall numbers, retaining its five-medal haul, but its gold tally fell from two to zero.

THE TWO BIGGEST STARS
Kumkum Mohod - 3 medals in Archery
The 17-year-old from Amravati has been the breakout star of India's archery campaign, finishing her Asian Games debut with two golds and a silver. She helped India win its first-ever Asian Games gold in the women's recurve team event, then paired with Dhiraj Bommadevara for silver in the mixed recurve event.
She saved her biggest moment for the individual final, beating South Korea's Oh Yejin in a shoot-off to become the first Indian woman to win an individual recurve medal at the Asian Games, and the first Indian recurve archer to win an individual Asian Games gold. The victory also secured India an LA 2028 Olympic quota place.
Neeru Dhanda - 3 medals in Shooting
The 26-year-old Haryana shooter turned a difficult build-up into a landmark Asian Games campaign, winning two golds and a silver. Dhanda first helped India win silver in the women's trap team event before producing the defining performance of her Games in the individual event. She shot 28 in the final to set an Asian Games record and became the first Indian woman to win an individual Asian Games gold in trap.
Her victory also ended India's wait for an individual trap gold at the Asian Games since Randhir Singh's men's title in 1978.
She later added another gold as part of the mixed trap, joining hands with Kynan Chenai.
