Former Australia all-rounder Moises Henriques has been named Portugal captain as they bid to qualify for the T20 World Cup for the first time, Cricket Portugal said on Tuesday.

The 39-year-old was born in Madeira, the Portuguese island that is also the birthplace of football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. His family moved to Australia when he was a young child, and he went on to enjoy a long domestic career with New South Wales and the Sydney Sixers.
Henriques announced his retirement from Australian domestic cricket last month but will continue playing overseas. He is contracted to Glasgow Cosmic for the inaugural European T20 Premier League.
Portugal, ranked 37th in the ICC men's T20I rankings, have been drawn alongside Israel, Germany, Greece and Czechia in Group B. The tournament will be played from August 14 to 20, with the group winners advancing to the final on August 21.
The winner of the final will progress to the European regional final, where Scotland, Jersey and Denmark have already secured their places. The top two teams from the regional final will advance to the global qualifier for the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Henriques last played for Australia in 2021 but has continued his playing career in domestic and franchise cricket. He brings 44 international appearances to a Portugal side chasing a place on the global stage.
Portugal's squad also includes former Sussex, Auckland and Wellington wicketkeeper-batter Craig Cachopa, while Cameron Shekleton has represented South Africa A.
Sebastian de Oliveira, who played a List A match for Gauteng alongside South Africa batter Ryan Rickelton, is also part of the squad. Bangladesh-born spinner Siraj Ullah Khadem, who was included in the longlist for this year's Hundred auction, has also been picked.
Henriques takes over as captain from Carlos Nunes, who remains in the squad.
