Former India captain MS Dhoni has once again been named the highest individual income tax payer in the Bihar-Jharkhand region for the financial year 2025-26, underlining the cricket icon’s enduring commercial stature even years after retiring from international cricket.

The announcement was made in Ranchi by Dr D. Sudhakar Rao, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax for Bihar and Jharkhand, who confirmed that Dhoni retained the top spot in the individual taxpayer category in the region. While the exact amount paid by the former India and Chennai Super Kings skipper was not disclosed, officials confirmed that Dhoni remained the leading contributor among individual taxpayers.

The recognition adds another chapter to Dhoni’s long-standing association with Ranchi and Jharkhand, where he remains one of the most celebrated sporting figures.

Dr Rao also shared broader tax revenue figures from the region, revealing that Jharkhand contributed approximately Rs 12,000 crore in revenue during the last financial year, while Bihar contributed around Rs 8,000 crore. Against the combined revenue target of Rs 20,000 crore, Jharkhand emerged as the stronger contributor, with officials attributing the performance largely to the state’s industrial and commercial infrastructure.

Dhoni’s cricket future remains a talking point

Although Dhoni stepped away from international cricket years ago, his future in the Indian Premier League continues to be closely followed.

The Chennai Super Kings legend remains part of the franchise setup, though his involvement this season has been complicated by injury concerns. Dhoni’s fitness has been a major talking point, with speculation continuing over whether he will return to the playing XI as CSK push through a crucial phase of the tournament.

Reports and comments from within the franchise have suggested that Dhoni is edging closer to a return. However, there has also been an indication that the veteran may be reluctant to disrupt the team combination, particularly if Chennai begin to build momentum and remain in the playoff race.

Even with limited on-field appearances, Dhoni’s influence within the franchise remains immense, both as a leader and as a figure whose presence continues to command enormous attention.

While his cricketing future remains uncertain, one thing appears unchanged — Dhoni’s standing as one of India’s most recognisable and commercially successful sporting personalities.

Whether through cricket, endorsements or business interests, the former India captain continues to make an impact well beyond the boundary rope.
