Lionel Messi red card debate grows as Algeria lodge FIFA complaint
FIFA World Cup 2026: Algeria have written to FIFA over refereeing decisions in their 3-0 defeat to Argentina, including a challenge by Lionel Messi on Aissa Mandi. The complaint has widened the debate over VAR and disciplinary consistency at the tournament.

Algeria have formally approached FIFA over a series of refereeing decisions during their 3-0 defeat to Argentina at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The North African side believe Lionel Messi should have been sent off during the first half and have questioned why several controversial incidents escaped punishment.
The complaint follows Argentina's victory in Kansas City, where Messi scored a hat-trick to power the defending champions to three points. However, much of the post-match discussion centred on a challenge involving the Argentina captain and Algeria skipper Aissa Mandi.

According to Reuters, Algeria have written to FIFA's refereeing commission raising concerns over the officiating team led by Polish referee Szymon Marciniak.
"The complaint primarily concerns Messi's challenge, which deserved a red card," an Algerian football federation source told AFP.
"We are not saying Argentina were not the better team, but we cannot stay silent when we feel certain incidents were handled unfairly."
"There were three situations that we believe warranted stronger action, and VAR did not intervene in any of them."
Algeria's concerns are not limited to the Messi challenge. The federation also highlighted a second-half incident involving Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, who allegedly caught Ibrahim Maza with an elbow during an aerial challenge.
DID MESSI DESERVE A RED CARD?
The incident involving Messi occurred midway through the first half when the forward appeared to catch Mandi on the calf with a raised boot from behind.
Algerian players immediately appealed for a red card, while supporters inside the stadium voiced their frustration as play continued without disciplinary action. Neither the referee nor the VAR team opted to review the challenge further.
The debate quickly spilled onto social media, where fans and pundits were divided over whether the challenge warranted a dismissal.
South Africa coach Hugo Broos also referenced the incident while discussing the three-match suspension handed to midfielder Themba Zwane earlier in the tournament.
"When I see what happened with Messi, I don't agree with what happened to my player," Broos said.
"I don't want Messi sent off because players of that quality should be on the pitch, but I struggle to understand the difference between the two incidents."
Messi went on to complete his hat-trick and equal Miroslav Klose's record of 16 World Cup goals, ensuring the controversy remained part of the wider conversation surrounding Argentina's victory.
WHAT NEXT FOR ARGENTINA IN WORLD CUP?
While Algeria await any response from FIFA, their immediate priority remains keeping their World Cup hopes alive.
The defeat to Argentina leaves them under pressure heading into their remaining Group J fixtures. Algeria next face Jordan in San Francisco before taking on Austria in their final group-stage match.
Argentina, meanwhile, continue their campaign against Austria in Dallas with momentum firmly on their side after a dominant opening display.
Whether FIFA chooses to address the complaint publicly remains to be seen, but the incident has already become one of the most debated refereeing decisions of the tournament so far.
