In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the agreement was reached by the "Board of Peace," an international body established to oversee post-war governance, reconstruction and stability in Gaza. "Today, the Board of Peace reached a historic agreement for the complete disarmament of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza," the 80-year-old Republican wrote, calling it a "monumental step" toward "lasting peace and security."
However, there are uncertainties about whether the agreement will hold because an Israeli official had earlier told news agency Reuters that the proposed terms were unsatisfactory. "Israel demands the complete disarmament of Hamas, including the removal of weapons from Gaza and the complete demilitarisation of the Strip as a precondition for any process," the official had said.
There was also no immediate public response from Hamas. However, an official of the group and a diplomat close to Egypt – one of the key mediators – said the progress of the deal would be tested by Israel's response and whether this allowed the possibility of a broad agreement.
The development comes amid continuing violence in the Gaza Strip. Palestinian medical officials said Israeli strikes on Thursday killed at least six people, including two children.
Meanwhile, Trump assured in his post that the deal would allow Israel to "have the security it deserves, with Gaza no longer used as a base for terror attacks".
The US President further said that the agreement would be carried out in a phased manner, with Israeli forces gradually withdrawing from the region and the International Stabilization Force will work with a new Palestinian police force to take responsibility for the Gaza Strip.
"This is a major milestone in the implementation of the Trump 20-Point Plan. The agreement will be carried out in carefully structured phases. As disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will withdraw, and the International Stabilization Force will work with a new Palestinian police force to take responsibility for Gaza being safe for its residents and its neighbors," he wrote in the post.
Trump thanked all the mediators – Egypt, Qatar and Turkey – for their efforts, as well as members of his administration involved in the negotiations. "Under this agreement, Gaza will finally be in the hands of a new Palestinian government that serves its PEOPLE," he wrote.
