US Mint to release Trump USD 1 coin for America's 250th birthday

The US Mint has started producing a commemorative USD 1 coin bearing Donald Trump's face for America's 250th birthday. The release has triggered criticism because living presidents are generally barred from appearing on US currency.

The US Mint has begun producing a new USD 1 coin bearing President Donald Trump’s face, with the Treasury Department saying on Wednesday that it will be released in the autumn. The coin is part of commemorative efforts for America’s 250th birthday, and its final design was approved earlier this year by the US Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were appointed by Trump.

The finished coin unveiled on Wednesday differs in some respects from the version approved earlier, including that it is not made of gold but has a gold finish. The move has also drawn criticism, particularly because federal law bars the depiction of a living president on US currency, though the treasury secretary has the authority to authorise the minting and issuance of coins in some circumstances.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a post on X that the coin is intended “to honour the enduring legacy of liberty and a lasting symbol of patriotism”. He added, “Featuring President Trump, it celebrates the strength of American values, and the promise of a nation dedicated to preserving freedom for all.”

Trump, a Republican, has shown a preference for placing his name and likeness in the historical record, following his renaming of the US Institute of Peace, the Kennedy Center performing arts venue and a new class of battleships, among other tributes.

The front of the coin shows Trump in a suit and tie with a stern expression. The word “LIBERTY” appears across the top half of the coin, while the dates 1776-2026 are on the lower half. The words “IN GOD WE TRUST” are placed in the middle. On the reverse, the coin carries the traditional bald eagle from the Great Seal of the US, with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” on the top half and the Latin phrase “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on the shield on the bird’s breast.

The final version also differs from the earlier approved design in that Trump is no longer shown with his fists resting on what appears to be a desk as he leans forward. The Treasury Department did not explain on Wednesday why the finished coin differed from the originally approved design. In March, the department had also announced that Trump’s signature would appear on all new US paper currency, though such notes traditionally carry the signatures of the treasury secretary and the treasurer, not the president.

In sum, the Treasury Department has moved ahead with a new USD 1 commemorative coin featuring Trump for America’s 250th birthday, even as the final design has changed from the version first approved and the decision has faced criticism over the depiction of a living president on US currency.
