TikTok influencer found dead days after accusing estranged husband of child abuse
Oklahoma police found TikTok influencer Sara Gilson and her estranged husband dead at their home and are investigating a suspected murder-suicide. The deaths came days after her viral post and amid allegations that had already led to a protective order.
TikTok influencer Sara Gilson, who accused her soon-to-be ex-husband of paedophilia less than two weeks earlier, was found dead alongside him at her Oklahoma home in what police are investigating as a suspected murder-suicide.
According to the Owasso Police Department and court records cited by NBC News, Gilson, 43, was shot dead on Thursday. Authorities identified the other deceased as her estranged husband, Jeremiah Duffey, who also used the name Shawn Duffey on social media. Police believe the incident appears to be a murder-suicide.
On July 11, Gilson shared a TikTok video, following a popular Netflix documentary-style trend, in which she referenced allegations against her husband.
"Preparing for when Netflix drops a documentary about my soon to be ex husband who I just found out is a pedophile," she wrote.
The caption added: "I wish I was joking. #plottwist #netflix #documentary."
According to NBC News, the video remained on her TikTok account after her death and quickly went viral after the news of the shooting spread.
COACH ACCUSED OF MOLESTING TEEN PLAYER
Court records show Gilson obtained an emergency protective order against Duffey on June 10 after police informed her that he had been accused of molesting a minor. Duffey was also accused of sending the girl inappropriate messages and giving her money "to keep her quiet".
According to the Owasso Police Department, the allegations stemmed from an incident on June 9, when a teenage girl and her parent reported that Duffey, who coached the girl's travelling basketball team, had inappropriately touched her during an event at an elementary school. Police said another coach witnessed the alleged incident, intervened immediately and alerted the girl's parent.
"Similar conduct by this coach towards this particular juvenile player was reported to have occurred over an extended period of time, in multiple law enforcement jurisdictions, across multiple states prior to this incident," police said.
Because Duffey is a member of the Osage Nation and the alleged incident occurred on tribal land, the case was referred to the US Attorney's Office for possible federal prosecution, ending the Owasso Police Department's jurisdiction over the molestation investigation.
911 CALL LED POLICE TO SCENE
According to the Owasso Police Department, officers responded late Thursday night after a 911 dispatcher heard a woman screaming followed by sound of a gunshot. Moments later, a juvenile who had fled to a neighbour's home called emergency services and said his stepfather had shot his mother.
When officers entered the residence, they found Gilson and Duffey dead from apparent gunshot wounds to the head.
Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public and continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Gilson is survived by her son and daughter. An online fundraiser created for her children described her as "an incredible mom" whose children "were the center of her world" and said she worked tirelessly to provide them with the best life possible.
