This popular mid-size SUV drops out of top 10 best-selling cars list in June
The Hyundai Creta suffered a dramatic sales slump in June 2026, crashing out of India's top 10 best-selling cars as production disruptions and intensifying competition weighed heavily on dispatches.

The Hyundai Creta, one of India's most successful mid-size SUVs and a long-time fixture among the country's best-selling passenger vehicles, dropped out of the top 10 sales chart in June 2026 after a sharp decline in dispatches.
Hyundai dispatched just 7,168 units of the Creta in June, marking a steep 54.59 per cent year-on-year decline from 15,786 units in June 2025. Compared to 15,235 units sold in May 2026, Creta volumes plunged 52.95 per cent.
The decline was significant enough to push the Creta completely out of the country's top 10 best-selling passenger vehicles, a list it has consistently featured in over the past few years.
The absence of Hyundai's flagship SUV also reflected in the company's overall domestic performance.
Hyundai's domestic sales decline
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) reported total sales of 51,335 units in June 2026, comprising 39,635 domestic units and 11,700 exports.
Domestic dispatches fell 9.97 per cent year-on-year from 44,024 units in June 2025. On a month-on-month basis, sales declined 17.15 per cent from 47,837 units in May 2026, a drop of 8,202 units.
With 39,635 domestic units, Hyundai also remained behind Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Mahindra in the Indian passenger vehicle market during the month.
India's 10 best-selling cars in June 2026
The June rankings were dominated by SUVs and compact cars, led by Tata Motors.
- Tata Punch/Punch EV – 21,006 units
- Tata Nexon/Nexon EV – 18,335 units
- Maruti Suzuki Dzire – 17,899 units
- Maruti Suzuki WagonR – 16,952 units
- Maruti Suzuki Ertiga – 16,111 units
- Maruti Suzuki Swift – 15,215 units
- Mahindra Scorpio/Scorpio-N – 14,097 units
- Maruti Suzuki Fronx – 13,135 units
- Maruti Suzuki Baleno – 12,488 units
- Hyundai Venue – 10,776 units
The Hyundai Venue emerged as the company's highest-selling model in June, while the Creta failed to secure a place in the top 10.
Competition has intensified
While Hyundai has attributed the steep decline largely to production disruption due, the Creta is also facing its most competitive market yet.
Over the past year, rivals have significantly strengthened their portfolios. Maruti Suzuki launched the Victoris, Kia refreshed the Seltos, while Tata Motors expanded its SUV lineup with the Sierra and Sierra EV after the Curvv failed to significantly dent the Creta's dominance. Meanwhile, Skoda and Volkswagen have also updated the Kushaq and Taigun, giving buyers more choices than ever before. Renault also reintroduced the Duster.
Although the June numbers were heavily influenced by supply constraints, the rapidly evolving mid-size SUV segment means the Creta can no longer rely solely on its established reputation.
Hyundai Creta: Multiple powertrain choices
Despite the sales setback, the Creta continues to offer one of the widest powertrain portfolios in the segment.
The SUV is available with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol, and 1.5-litre diesel engine. The naturally aspirated petrol develops 115bhp and 144Nm and is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and a CVT. The 1.5-litre Turbo GDi engine produces 160bhp and 253Nm, mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The 1.5-litre U2 CRDi diesel generates 116bhp and 250Nm, with both 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox options. Buyers looking for a sportier driving experience can opt for the Creta N Line, which uses the same turbo-petrol engine but is available with both a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DCT.
Hyundai also offers the Creta Electric, available with 42kWh and 51.4kWh battery packs, delivering claimed driving ranges of 390km and 473km, respectively, on a full charge.
While June 2026 may prove to be an anomaly due to production constraints, the Creta's exit from India's top 10 best-selling cars serves as a reminder that the country's fiercely contested SUV market is becoming increasingly difficult to dominate.
