A lift operator in Haryana's Gurugram allegedly lost vision in one eye after being brutally assaulted by a group of residents he had rushed to help when a lift malfunctioned in a residential society, police said.

The incident took place on June 9 at Orchard Avenue Society in Gurugram's Sector 93 and has sparked outrage after allegations emerged that crucial CCTV footage has still not been handed over to investigators a week later.

RESCUE ATTEMPT ENDS IN VIOLENT ASSAULT

According to information available so far, the trouble began when a lift in the society's I-Tower became stuck midway with several young men trapped inside.

After receiving information about the malfunction, lift operator Gaurav reportedly rushed up the stairs to the seventh floor in an effort to rescue those inside.

However, by the time he and his colleagues reached the floor, the lift had already moved down. Gaurav then hurried towards the ground floor to assist the occupants and help them exit safely.

What followed, according to the complaint, was a shocking attack.

As soon as the lift doors opened, the trapped occupants allegedly turned on the operator instead of waiting for an explanation about the technical fault.

OPERATOR SUFFERS SEVERE INJURIES

Gaurav was allegedly beaten by the group, with society staff and security personnel stepping in to stop the assault.

Police said the main accused, identified as Bharat, continued the attack and allegedly assaulted Gaurav with sticks, causing serious injuries.

The victim reportedly suffered permanent loss of vision in one eye following the assault.

Bloodied and critically injured, Gaurav was first taken to a government hospital in Gurugram before being referred to AIIMS in Delhi for specialised treatment.

He is currently undergoing treatment and his condition is reported to be stable. Doctors have not yet issued any official statement regarding the extent of damage to his eye.

POLICE ARREST MAIN ACCUSED

Following Gaurav's complaint, police registered an FIR and arrested the main accused, Bharat.

Investigators believe more people may have been involved in the attack and efforts are underway to identify them.

The case is now drawing attention not only because of the alleged brutality of the assault but also because of questions surrounding the availability of CCTV footage.

CCTV FOOTAGE YET TO BE HANDED OVER

Police said the maintenance company responsible for the society has not provided CCTV footage related to the incident despite seven days having passed since the attack.

The absence of the footage has made it difficult for investigators to identify all those allegedly involved.

Authorities have issued another notice to the maintenance department, directing it to hand over the footage at the earliest.

Police are continuing their investigation and are examining the circumstances that led to the assault as well as the delay in providing surveillance recordings that could prove crucial to the case.
