Kalyan Bainsla, who rammed woman biker in Gurugram, arrested from Rajasthan

Kalyan Bainsla, the car driver who chased and rammed a woman biker in Gurugram, has been arrested in Rajasthan’s Dausa, marking a major breakthrough in the hit-and-run case that has drawn widespread attention and sparked outrage across the country.

A second individual, identified as Lavneesh and a friend of Bainsla, has also been taken into custody along with the accused. However, officials are yet to ascertain details about his involvement in the case.

Bainsla had been absconding since the incident on Sunday morning, and a massive manhunt was underway to trace him. He will now face charges including attempt to murder, among other offences.

The incident took place on Sunday on Gurugram's Golf Course Road, where the woman biker, Shivani Chauhan, also known as Sia, was riding with a group of other bikers. According to her account, Bainsla's car began following her and the occupants appeared to be intoxicated. When she asked them to maintain a safe distance, the car accelerated towards her bike and rammed it from the side. The impact threw her off the bike and sent her skidding several metres along the road.

Bainsla, however, had denied deliberately ramming car into the bike, claiming he was unaware that a woman was riding the bike.

VICTIM'S STATEMENT RECORDED

Gurugram Police have recorded the statement of biker Shivani Chauhan, also known as Sia, in connection with the hit-and-run case. Police are also producing Sia before a court for recording her statement under Section 164 of the CrPC, which provides for the judicial recording of statements during an investigation.

The development comes after police arrested accused Kalyan Bainsla in Rajasthan's Dausa and added an attempt-to-murder charge to the case.

The arrest comes after a significant escalation in the case, with Gurugram Police adding an attempt-to-murder charge after examining viral videos of the incident and considering allegations raised by the biker's family.

Senior Gurugram Police officer Sandeep Malik had earlier said the videos appeared to show the car being deliberately driven into the biker. Police subsequently registered an attempt-to-murder case, following pressure from Sia's family for strict action against the accused.

On Monday, speaking exclusively to India Today TV, Bainsla had admitted that his car collided with Sia's bike but denied intentionally hitting her.

He claimed that he lost control of the vehicle near a U-turn and did not stop immediately because he feared being attacked by the group of bikers travelling with Sia. He also claimed that several bikers had repeatedly overtaken his vehicle.

"They were repeatedly coming in front of me and then slowing down the bike," he said. "Am I going around hitting everyone? You can check the CCTV," he claimed earlier.

Bainsla, a gym owner who describes himself as an international kabaddi player, claimed he fled the scene because he feared that the group of bikers would assault him and his family. He has also deactivated his Instagram account following the incident and the ensuing controversy.

Sia, who suffered minor injuries in the crash, however, rejected the accused's claims. She alleged that the car had followed her and that the collision was deliberate. Speaking exclusively to India Today TV, she questioned why Bainsla did not stop at the scene after his car hit her bike if he was genuinely distressed by the accident.

In a video statement, Sia alleged that she was targeted because she was a woman biker and that there was a deliberate attempt to stop her. She said the incident could have cost her life and alleged that Bainsla did not even attempt to check whether she was safe after the collision.

Videos of the hit-and-run incident went viral and sparked widespread outrage across the country.

A video recorded by a camera mounted on Sia's bike shows the car approaching her bike before allegedly striking it from the side. The impact knocked her off the bike and sent her skidding several metres along the road.

Another video, recorded by a biker travelling behind her, also surfaced on social media. The footage allegedly shows the driver signalling Sia to stop and subsequently steering the car towards her bike before the collision.

Following the widespread outrage, Gurugram Police registered a case on its own. The initial FIR was filed under charges of rash driving and causing hurt. After reviewing the video footage, police later added an attempt-to-murder charge to the case.
