Bihar woman jumps from moving auto to escape driver's harassment
The 19-year-old woman, who was returning home in the evening after attending a computer coaching class, allegedly objected to the driver's behaviour and jumped out of the moving vehicle after he accelerated despite her asking him to stop.
A 19-year-old woman allegedly jumped from a moving autorickshaw after the driver started misbehaving with her in Arrah of Bihar's Bhojpur district.
The incident took place on Saturday, September 26. The accused, identified as 40-year-old Vijay Kumar Chaurasia alias Masto, has been arrested, police said.
This is probably the latest in a string of incidents raising questions over women's safety in Bihar.
The woman, who was returning home in the evening after attending a computer coaching class, allegedly objected to the driver's behaviour and jumped out of the moving vehicle after he accelerated despite her asking him to stop.
She purportedly suffered a minor injury to the head due to the fall. The woman immediately informed her family and contacted the police.
The police team reached the spot and took the auto driver into custody. Police also seized the vehicle. The accused is a resident of the same village where the complainant lives.
The police were in the process of registering an FIR on the basis of the woman's complaint.
WORRYING TREND EMERGES
Multiple incidents of women being molested or sexually harassed have surfaced from various parts of Bihar over the past fortnight.
In Jamui, a teenage boy and girl returning from coaching classes were stopped by a group of men, surrounded, questioned and subjected to physical assault and molestation before being allowed to leave, as seen in a viral video clip.
The crime was recorded on camera by the accused themselves.
The video showed the girl being molested and her friend pleading with the accused to let her go. The incident took place on September 19.
Police on Tuesday, September 22, claimed to have nabbed the "two main accused" in the case. The duo were taken into custody following an encounter in which one of them was injured.
With this, the total number of people held in connection with the incident reached at least five, including three minors.
In another incident raising questions over women's safety, a case was registered in Banka district against six men after a video on social media showed a woman being harassed and physically assaulted.
The incident took place at Mandar Hill, a popular tourist and pilgrimage there, according to the police.
In a similar incident in Samastipur, a person was arrested after a video purportedly showing a group of young men behaving indecently with a minor girl went viral on social media.
