Scindia fumes over 'corruption' in Rs 113 crore sewer project in Madhya Pradesh

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia fumed over alleged corruption and irregularities charges in Shivpuri’s 113-crore sewer project which failed to deliver the intended results, with the city’s sewer system continuing to remain in poor condition despite the expenditure.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee at the Collector’s office, Scindia expressed dissatisfaction with the way the sewer project had been implemented.

Referring to history, Scindia said that around 15 km of sewer lines had been laid in Shivpuri during the tenure of his father, Madhavrao Maharaj I. He said that several decades later, around 7 km of that old sewer line is still functioning properly.

In contrast, Scindia said, the Public Health Engineering Department (PHE) and the municipal council have been unable to complete the modern sewer project despite the use of modern technology and an expenditure of 113 crore.

Scindia said the project will now be handed over to the Madhya Pradesh Urban Development Corporation (MPUDC) so that the work can be completed on time and with proper quality.

Meanwhile, the Congress has said that the important sewer project has fallen victim to corruption. Shivpuri District Congress president Mohit Agrawal demanded that FIRs be registered against the officials responsible and that the government funds be recovered.
