Fact Check: T-shirt mocking Modi spotted on foreign soil? Here are the facts
India Today Fact Check found that a US-based social media user shared the original photo, which featured Donald Trump's name.
A photo of a person wearing a T-shirt taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi has gone viral. The T-shirt featured the words, “Modi is a math genius. He divides the country. He subtracts jobs. He adds to the debt. And he multiplies misery!”
Supreme Court lawyer and author Prashant Bhushan shared the photo and wrote, “Vishwaguru is recognised internationally as a Math genius!”
India Today Fact Check has found that the image was digitally altered. The original photo featured Donald Trump’s name.
OUR PROBE
A reverse search of the viral image led us to a post by Harry Shanon, a US-based social media user, from August 16. This version of the image featured Donald Trump's name. Shanon captioned the post: "The truth hurts. Resist, peaceful but loud. March. Vote for a BLUE WAVE."
Next, we checked the image using OpenAI's Verify tool, which identifies images generated using ChatGPT, the OpenAI API, or Codex. Results clearly suggest that the image featuring Modi’s name was generated using OpenAI’s tools. This makes it evident that the viral image is not authentic.
While we could not independently verify whether the image shared by Shanon was also synthetic, T-shirts bearing this exact text are fairly popular among Democratic Party supporters in the United States. A T-shirt with identical wording can be found listed on Amazon.com, and a video shared by Times Now shows people wearing similar T-shirts in public and at political events.
It is, thus, clear that the viral image is digitally altered.
