Can an emotion that has lived for centuries through music and performance find an entirely new expression through chocolate?

For centuries, Navarasa has given form to nine distinct human emotions, interpreted through music, dance and storytelling. Now, for the first time, Fabelle, in collaboration with ITC Sangeet Research Academy (SRA), brings these emotions to life through an unexpected medium: chocolate and music.

The Nav-Ras Collection reimagines each of the nine Rasas as a handcrafted praline designed to evoke a distinct emotion through flavour, texture and form. These are Shringara (Love), Hasya (Joy), Karuna (Compassion), Raudra (Passion and Intensity), Veera (Courage), Bhayanaka (Anticipation), Bibhatsa (The Unexpected), Adbhuta (Wonder) and Shanta (Serenity). Fabelle's Master Chocolatiers have translated each Rasa through flavour, ingredients, texture and form, while maestros and eminent artists from ITC Sangeet Research Academy have created nine original musical interpretations inspired by the same emotions. Each Rasa can be experienced in two ways, through what one hears and what one tastes. The compositions can be accessed through a QR code placed inside the box.

Shringara, the Rasa of love and connection, takes the form of a heart. Ruby Chocolate and Aqua Rose give it a floral, harmonious character. Raudra, representing intensity and passion, draws from the third eye. Its sculpted form and dark chocolate are lifted by the heat of Ancho Chilli and the contrasting sweetness of Candied Mango. Veera interprets courage through 70% dark chocolate and Macadamia, while Shanta pairs Acacia Honey with dark chocolate mousse in a white rose-inspired form. Across the collection, each chocolate is distinguished not only by its flavour but by the emotion it seeks to express.

The annexure to the collection goes further into the pairing of the two crafts. Hasya takes its musical cue from Raga Hamsadhwani, and Fabelle answers with warm Toffee and Banoffee Pie in a gift-shaped chocolate. Karuna draws from Raga Marwa and Raga Lalit Pancham, with jasmine and roasted cashews in a petal-inspired form. Raudra follows the serious, powerful character of Raga Shree, and Veera is set to Raga Adana. Bhayanaka builds tension through unresolved tonal movement, matched by an infinite spiral of dark chocolate, coffee and cinnamon. Bibhatsa pairs unexpected musical phrasing with pumpkin spice and dark chocolate. Adbhuta brings Hindustani and Carnatic influences together, with a diamond-shaped dark chocolate form, and Shanta takes its calm from Raga Yaman.

The collection was unveiled at ITC Grand Central, Mumbai, at an immersive evening where guests experienced the Rasas through live music and chocolate. Artists from ITC Sangeet Research Academy performed in the presence of maestros Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty and Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, along with Saradindu Dutta, Executive Director, ITC Sangeet Research Academy.

Subash Balar, Vice President and Business Head – Chocolates, Coffee and Confectionery & NCD, Foods Division, ITC Ltd., said, "At Fabelle, we have always believed that fine chocolate can go beyond indulgence and serve as an expression of craftsmanship and creativity. With The Nav-Ras Collection, our Master Chocolatiers have interpreted something as intangible as emotion through the interplay of form, texture and flavour. Each praline expresses a distinct Rasa, while our collaboration with ITC Sangeet Research Academy brings that same emotion to life through music. The result is a multisensory experience created for chocolate connoisseurs who value craftsmanship, detail and discovery."

Saradindu Dutta, Executive Director, ITC Sangeet Research Academy, said, "Indian classical music has the extraordinary ability to evoke emotion without the need for words. The Navarasa provides a timeless vocabulary for expressing these emotions. Our musical collaboration with Fabelle allowed us to explore how the same emotion could find expression through an entirely different sensory language, chocolate. As our musicians interpreted each Rasa through melody, rhythm and instrumentation, Fabelle's Master Chocolatiers explored it through flavour, texture and form. The result is a fascinating symphony between two crafts, each expressing the same emotion in its own language."

With Nav-Ras, Fabelle extends its exploration of what luxury chocolate can represent, moving beyond flavour into music, emotion and storytelling. The collection builds on the brand's legacy of chocolate innovation, including Trinity Truffles Extraordinaire and Fabelle Finesse.
