Undertrial prisoner gets VIP ward, plus girlfriend visit at Karnataka hospital
A surprise inspection at a hospital in Karnataka's Mandya by legal authorities found an undertrial prisoner meeting his girlfriend and staying in a special ward despite having no court permission or serious medical condition.
An undertrial prisoner was allegedly found meeting his girlfriend at a hospital in Karnataka's Mandya during a surprise inspection, sources said, adding he was found in a special ward despite having no serious medical condition.
The inspection by the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority (KSLSA) at Mandya District Jail and MIMS Hospital raised questions over the special privileges allegedly being extended to the prisoner, Mohammad Hussain.
Hussain, who was arrested in connection with alleged irregularities at the Srirangapatna Taluk Land Records Office, was remanded to judicial custody on July 3.
He was later admitted to MIMS Hospital on the recommendation of the jail medical officer.
The KSLSA team found that Hussain was being treated in a special ward without court permission and that there was no serious medical condition warranting such treatment, according to sources.
Sources also said he was allegedly meeting his girlfriend while in hospital.
Following the inspection, a case was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The inspection team included District Sessions Judge and District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) President Chandrashekar C, KSLSA Member Secretary Shashidhar Shetty, PRO Balasubramani, Member Dr Mohan Rao Nalvade and DLSA Member Secretary Anand M.
