BRS MLAs Suspended From Telangana Assembly, Opposition Protests & Clash With Police

Students at a tribal girls' residential school in Venkatapuram mandal of Telangana's Mulugu district have alleged a severe drinking water crisis and inadequate basic amenities. The students stated they were forced to use water meant for washing clothes and had to carry buckets across floors daily. They further alleged being assaulted by the school management and principal after raising concerns over the lack of clean drinking water and poorly maintained premises with overflowing wastewater. Following repeated unheeded complaints, parents have demanded an immediate intervention and inquiry by the district administration and tribal welfare authorities.

Delhi Police made a fifth arrest in connection with the Satya Niketan building collapse, apprehending labor contractor Sanoj from Kasganj in Uttar Pradesh. Sanoj stands accused of executing structural modifications to the foundation in the basement without required Municipal Corporation of Delhi permits. Investigators revealed that the building was leased out to run a paying guest accommodation. Meanwhile, four other individuals—Hariram, his wife Urmila, son Mahesh, and PG operator Sudhanshu—have been arrested, while another partner, Shubham Tyagi, remains absconding. The incident has turned the spotlight on widespread urban planning and civic safety violations across Delhi, where total buildings surged from 24.1 lakh in 2016 to 28.4 lakh in 2023. An analysis of 1,717 structures in Satya Niketan revealed that 660 buildings (38%) recorded illegal height increases since 2016, placing severe structural burdens on decades-old foundations.

The Enforcement Directorate conducted searches across 18 locations in Karnataka and Maharashtra linked to Karnataka PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi, his daughter and sitting Member of Parliament Priyanka Jarkiholi, and his brother-in-law Manjunath. The raids covered locations across Bengaluru, Belagavi, and Gokak in connection with a case registered under the Foreign Exchange Management Act regarding foreign investments. Documents procured during previous searches are being verified during the ongoing investigation.

Following a fatal building collapse in Satya Niketan that claimed the lives of seven students, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has commenced a phased demolition of adjacent unsafe structures, including the five-storey Kanak Lata girls' paying guest building. MCD personnel began dismantling the top floors with hammers after evacuating residents and retrieving their belongings. The municipal authorities have also issued demolition and show-cause notices against buildings with unauthorised additional storeys violating height regulations. The incident has raised wider questions regarding student accommodation near Delhi University's South Campus, where only four percent of enrolled students have access to university hostel infrastructure. The report highlights how private PG operators exploit students through exorbitant electricity charges ranging between 14 to 18 rupees per unit, alongside rising rents and a lack of civic oversight.
