The Election Commission of India has issued a clarification regarding the roll out of the Special Intensive Revision exercise amid allegations of misuse of authority and dissent within the poll body. The Commission maintained that differences of opinion are natural in a democratic setup and that discussions build consensus. It stated that decisions were taken collectively and with unanimous approval, denying any interference in the system. The clarification comes amidst claims that notices and deletions during the revision exercise caused widespread disruption, alongside political demands for accountability.

A political controversy erupted following allegations of internal dissent within the Election Commission of India. Objections were reportedly raised by Election Commissioners Vivek Joshi and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu regarding unilateral decisions, centralisation of voter software access away from Electoral Registration Officers, and procedural changes concerning Form 6. In response, opposition parties, including the Congress and Samajwadi Party, intensified criticism against the poll panel and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, signaling potential legal appeals before the Supreme Court ahead of upcoming state elections.

Speaking to India Today, former Chief Election Commissioner O.P. Rawat addressed the controversies surrounding the Election Commission of India and the Special Summary Revision exercise. Rawat explained that decisions within the Election Commission can only be taken in meetings where all three commissioners are present, either unanimously or via a majority vote. Addressing voter deletions in West Bengal, Rawat termed denying democratic rights through faulty processes a "shame on democracy" after 93 percent of deleted voters returned via appellate tribunals. He noted that identifying illegal immigrants falls under the Ministry of Home Affairs, not the Election Commission. Expressing concern over the poll body's global reputation coming under scrutiny, Rawat urged the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners to sit together, address concerns transparently, and take immediate steps to rebuild public confidence.
