A major political debate has erupted following allegations against Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the electoral process. The Trinamool Congress and other opposition parties have demanded answers and sought re-elections across states where special revision was conducted. In response, the Bharatiya Janata Party defended the democratic process, citing official notes from the Election Commission of India. The BJP highlighted assembly election trends in West Bengal, arguing that opposition parties were the primary beneficiaries in seats with significant voter deletions, while dismissing opposition demands as an attempt to capture power without winning public support.

A press conference addressed opposition allegations regarding voter list deletions and the functioning of the Election Commission of India. Data from twenty West Bengal assembly constituencies was highlighted to counter claims of electoral manipulation through voter deletions under the Special Intensive Revision process, noting that opposition parties won a majority of seats where maximum deletions occurred. The address detailed the internal deliberations among the three Election Commissioners, stating that institutional discussions and eventual unanimity in decision-making reflect democratic norms rather than authoritarianism. The briefing reviewed election outcomes across various states since 2014, past appointments of former Chief Election Commissioners, and historical dissent within the commission during previous administrations. Additionally, reference was made to legal proceedings upholding the legality of the Special Intensive Revision process, emphasising reliance on democratic voter participation and constitutional institutions.

Opposition leaders have raised demands for re-elections across states where polling was conducted following voter list revisions. Political parties within the opposition alliance have coordinated to present their grievances before judicial authorities and call for criminal proceedings and accountability regarding the management of election machinery. Concerns have been raised over the exclusion of voters from electoral rolls, alleged capturing of counting processes, and administrative appointments. The opposition has sought the restoration of previous voter lists, fresh polling in affected states, and nationwide mobilization regarding democratic processes.

Amid escalating crude oil rates driven by West Asia tensions, government sources have confirmed that no price hike is being planned for petrol and diesel. With global crude prices expected to remain volatile, the government is prioritising energy security and may subsidise oil marketing companies to absorb price pressures rather than passing them on to consumers. To mitigate supply disruptions around Iranian sectors, plans are underway to diversify crude procurement to Iraq and Saudi Arabia while maintaining Russian crude imports. Oil marketing companies currently face under-recoveries of Rs 20 to 25 per litre for diesel and Rs 5 to 10 per litre for petrol.
