Ahead of the festive season, onion prices have begun to soar alongside sugar price hikes. The average retail price of onions has increased by forty-five percent compared to last year and nineteen percent from last month. The government clarified that seasonal demand in August and September, along with weather conditions and supply chain disruptions, contributed to the surge. Unseasonal rain has particularly impacted onion supplies from Maharashtra. To cool down soaring retail prices and stabilize supply, the government is bringing in onion shipments using the Kanda Express.
