What is Delhi's 108-ft 'Planter Rangoli' planned for India Gate?

Delhi may soon get a rangoli unlike the usual ones made with colours, powders or flowers. The Delhi Forest Department is planning a giant ‘Planter Rangoli’ made using colourful plants as part of Sewa Pakhwada. The proposed installation is planned at India Gate, although the location is yet to receive final approval.
According to official documents, the display is expected to measure 108 feet by 108 feet and will remain in place for 30 days. The department has invited experienced landscapers and designers to create and maintain the unusual installation.
WHAT IS THE ‘PLANTER RANGOLI’?
Simply put, it is a large rangoli-style decorative display made with plants instead of conventional rangoli colours or powders.
The proposed installation will use colourful plants to create the rangoli design. The idea is being taken up as part of activities linked to Sewa Pakhwada, which is observed from September 17 to October 2.
The department is looking for an experienced agency to handle both the creation and upkeep of the display.
WHERE WILL DELHI’S GIANT RANGOLI COME UP?
India Gate has been proposed as the venue, but it is not final yet.
The tender document describes India Gate as a tentative location and states that the final site will depend on approval and availability. A Forest Department official also told PTI that the installation is being planned at India Gate in connection with Sewa Pakhwada.
If the location is approved, the 108-ft-by-108-ft display would become a large plant-based decorative installation in one of Delhi’s best-known public spaces.
WHO WILL CREATE AND MAINTAIN IT?
The Forest Department has invited bids from reputed, experienced and eligible agencies through a two-bid system. Agencies will also have to make a technical presentation as part of the selection process.
The selected agency will be responsible for creating the Planter Rangoli as well as maintaining it for 30 days.
The tender is being processed through e-tendering. Participating agencies need a digital signature and registration with the Delhi government’s e-procurement system. An earnest money deposit is also required, with exemptions available to eligible categories.
WHY IS IT DIFFERENT FROM A USUAL RANGOLI?
A conventional rangoli is generally created using coloured powders, colours, flowers or other decorative materials. Delhi’s proposed plant rangoli will instead use colourful plants to form the display.
The final design and other details will depend on the selected agency and the Forest Department’s requirements.
If approved, the installation will become one of the activities marking Sewa Pakhwada in Delhi, combining landscaping and public decoration in a format that is very different from a traditional rangoli.
