The India Story director Chettan DK has shared that the inspiration behind his upcoming courtroom drama came from the real-life cancer diagnosis of a six-year-old child. In an exclusive interview with India Today, the filmmaker said the incident led him to research food safety and public health. His remarks come as the film faces legal scrutiny ahead of its release over claims made in its promotional material.

Talking about the inspiration behind the film, Chettan DK said, "Our writer-producer, Mr Shinde, has a close friend whose six-year-old child was diagnosed with cancer. We were shocked to know about this - how could such a young child get cancer? That's where the idea for the character began to evolve. After that, I started researching the issue, talked to nutritionist, public health experts and what I discovered was deeply disturbing. It's a massive issue."

He said his research led him to several reports and case studies that, according to him, raised serious concerns about the long-term impact of chemical exposure and food safety.

"If you search online, Google will probably show you only about 1% of the available research. For example, there's a place called Kasaragod in Kerala, where chemicals were sprayed across nearly 15,000 acres. As a result, many children there were born with disabilities. It's truly alarming," the director added.

The director said bringing the story to the screen was far from easy. He maintained that despite the challenges, the team remained committed to telling what they believe is an important story.

Chettan said, "It was definitely a challenging film to make. Difficulties will always come and go, but if you genuinely want to contribute something meaningful to Mother India, then you have to be willing to fight for it. That's the kind of thinking we believe in. We want to do something that benefits people. We're not doing anything wrong."

Ahead of its theatrical release, The India Story has received a legal notice over claims made in its teaser and promotional material. According to reports, Bhavesh Sodha of Agri Business Centre has objected to the film's promos, alleging that they contain scientifically unverified and misleading claims about Indian agriculture, dairy and poultry farming. The notice has also been sent to Zee Studios and MIG Production & Studios LLP.

The notice alleges that the film's promotional material makes exaggerated claims about food adulteration, pesticide use and cancer rates. It also objects to the portrayal of India's agricultural sector as a "slow poison", arguing that these claims lack sufficient scientific evidence.

The complainant has specifically challenged statements in the teaser that suggest Indian farmers excessively use pesticides and that a large portion of the country's milk supply is contaminated.

The notice also objects to a scene showing a syringe being injected into a chicken, calling it misleading and scientifically inaccurate. It further argues that the teaser draws a connection between farming practices and rising cancer cases without credible scientific backing.

Starring Kajal Aggarwal and Shreyas Talpade, The India Story is a courtroom drama centred on food adulteration and its impact on public health. The film is slated to release in theatres on July 24, 2026.
