CM Vijay's son Jason Sanjay's directorial debut Sigma locks October release

CM Vijay's son, Jason Sanjay's directorial debut, Sigma, will now release in theatres on October 2. The makers announced the new release date on Tuesday, weeks after the film was postponed from its earlier release date of July 31.

The release was pushed following the rescheduling of Vijay's farewell film, Jana Nayagan, which was released in theatres on July 23. Sigma stars Sundeep Kishan in the lead and is produced by Subaskaran under the Lyca Productions banner.

Described by the makers as a "high-stakes heist" film, Sigma is expected to blend action, comedy, treasure-hunt and heist elements. Jason Sanjay, who has written and directed the film, has described it as a highly energetic cinematic experience.

Jason Sanjay is the son of actor-turned-Chief Minister Vijay, and Sigma marks his first film as a director. Announcing the date he wrote in the caption, "Mark the date for the heist on October 2. SIGMA is all set to light up the screens (sic)." The film features an ensemble cast including Faria Abdullah, Raju Sundaram, Sampath Raj, Shiv Panditt, Anbu Thasan, Yog Japee, Magalakshmi, Sheela Rajkumar, Kamalesh and Kiran Konda.

Kaleel Raja, Sanjeev S and Ajaiy Ashok have been credited as additional screenplay writers. The technical crew includes composer Thaman S, cinematographer Krishnan Vasant, editor Praveen KL and stunt choreographers Venkat and Selva.

Speaking about the film earlier while promoting Super Subbu, Sundeep Kishan had said, "We are very excited about it. We also realised that Sigma is not just a film but a cultural experience. It is Sanjay's debut, and he has taken a completely alternative route, wanting to be director. So we come with that responsibility."

Jason Sanjay has also spoken about his journey into filmmaking and his plans before making his directorial debut. In recent interactions, he revealed that he had turned down an acting offer from director Alphonse Puthren. He has also opened up about his early dreams and how he eventually decided to pursue direction.

Sigma has been shot across several locations, including Chennai, Thailand, Thalakona and Salem. With its new release date, the film is now set to arrive during the Gandhi Jayanti holiday window.

However, the October 2 release will also see Sigma face competition from several films. Vijay Sethupathi's Baththa, directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, and Mr Bhaarath are scheduled to release on October 1. Ram, Nivin Pauly and Soori's long-awaited Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai is also scheduled to hit theatres on October 1.
