England vs Pakistan 3rd Test Day 1: Highlights from Birmingham

Welcome back for the afternoon session. There is a bit of cloud cover as the two umpires and players make their way out to the centre. Razaullah will get the session underway with the ball. Gus Atkinson to face the first ball. Two slips and a gully in place. Let's play.

... DAY 2, SESSION 2 ...

No balls highlight the bowling - Pakistan have been very costly with the ball on Day 2 and they will be very disappointed that they have let England go from 39/3 to now 299/6. There wasn't much movement for the seamers to begin with today, but the likes of Mohammad Ali and Razaullah constantly overstepped, and there have been 11 No Balls in this innings alone. There was some good bowling in between, especially around the middle of the session when Mohammad Ali got the ball to move consistently. Razaullah too bowled well towards the end of the session and picked up his second wicket, but overall, it has been lackluster as even the wicket of Harry Brook was a run-out. The post-Lunch session is set to begin at 12.40 pm GMT, and it will be a crucial one. England can take the game well out of Pakistan's reach if Jamie Smith hangs around for about an hour or so. However, if Pakistan get the remaining four wickets quickly, they might still have a shot at redemption.

Lawrence leads a fiery session with the bat - England came into Day 2 at 156/4, and they managed to muster up 45 runs in the first 5 overs itself, and Dan Lawrence raced into the 40s in the blink of an eye. Harry Brook looked settled at the other end, but a misjudged single sent him packing via a run out. After that, Jamie Smith joined Lawrence, who played well for his 65, but failed to convert a positive showing into a big score. Smith has looked in good nick too and is currently unbeaten on 47 (53). He will now look to maximize this start and bat with the lower order as England look to take their lead beyond 200 and then some.

12.04 pm GMT - LUNCH, DAY 2 - End of an action-packed first session on Day 2. Right now, England have a first-innings lead of 166, which is plenty, and they still have 4 wickets in hand. Pakistan have made inroads with the ball, just not enough, and have it all to do in the next session. As many as 143 runs came in that session, off just 25 overs, so the overrate wasn't the best but the scoring rate was.

The third umpire has a look and UltraEdge shows a thin inside edge. NOT OUT!

There's a long discussion, but Babar Azam decides to opt against the review, which ends up turning right as the replay shows that the ball is flying over the middle stump with the help of Ball Tracking.

61.2: Mohammad Imran to Dan Lawrence, OUT! PLAYED ON! Dan Lawrence is fuming after that dismissal, but kudos to Mohammad Imran for stepping up to break the 64-run partnership. This is just a shade behind the good length, pitching it outside off and nipping in pretty late. Dan Lawrence crouches a bit to steer it toward backward point, but as the ball jags back, it takes the inside edge and deflects off to crash into the stumps. Dan Lawrence has to depart after a handy knock, and the lead is 160.

DRINKS BREAK! England started off the morning session with having 23 lead on the board, and within the first hour of Day 2, they scaled it to 98. Dan Lawrence and Harry Brook took an aggressive approach to take on the bowlers without offering any untidy shots. The partnership was growing well, but Harry Brook lost his wicket to a run-out, which he could have easily avoided if he had been more alert. Mohammad Ali is getting some decent outswings the moment he got into the attack and have bowled some dangerous deliveries, asking the right questions to Dan Lawrence. The sun is out and the conditions seem ideal for the English batters, but let's see how it pans out after the drinks break.

Pakistan get their fifth wicket. Jamie Smith walks up to the crease, replacing Harry Brook. Smith has an issue with his thumb and might not keep in the second innings.

49.1: Saim Ayub to Harry Brook, OUT! BROOK IS RUN OUT! That's a brain-fade moment from Harry Brook and he is distraught with himself. Saim Ayub bowls it flatter, pushing it into the pads. Brook presses back and clips it to the right of mid-wicket. The batters set off for the single, but Brook starts running quickly only after jogging the first few steps. It's pretty late when he realizes that he's in trouble. Shan Masood is quick to the ball and is quick to fire the throw back to the bowler as well. Ayub whips off the bails and Brook is well short. End of a 86-run stand for the 5th wicket.

Dan Lawrence expects the ball to move away and tries to punch, but the ball just jags back in sharply. The ball zips through the gate and goes a few inches over the stumps. His 3rd half-century in the series and 7th one overall in Test cricket. Lawrence is yet to make a Test hundred, and one feels this is his best opportunity to do so yet.

Day 2 outlook - Heading into Day 2, things look distinctly comfortable for England. Harry Brook is well set and firing at the crease, alongside Dan Lawrence, a batter capable of real composure once he finds his rhythm. Pakistan's bowlers will be desperate to strike early in the morning session, hoping to make full use of the overcast skies hanging over Birmingham. As for the weather, a passing shower can't be ruled out, but here's hoping for a full day's play, just like the one we witnessed on Day 1. Stick around with us folks, as we are not far from the first delivery of Day 2.

England's story on Day 1 - For England, Josh Tongue led the charge with a superb 4 for 42, ably supported by Jofra Archer's 3 for 25. But it was Ollie Robinson who stole the show. A masterclass in control, conceding just 15 runs in 11 overs, five of them maidens, also picking three wickets which choked off any hope of a Pakistan fightback. However, England's reply with the bat began shakily, slipping to 39 for 3 as Pakistan's new-ball bowlers smelled blood. But Emilio Gay and Harry Brook had other plans, forging a composed 104-run stand for the fourth wicket to steady the ship. Gay fell late for a well-crafted 60, castled by debutant Razaullah, but Brook stood tall at the other end, unbeaten on 52 as stumps were drawn.

Same old story for Pakistan's batting - Pakistan's Day 1 read like a script they can't seem to rewrite. Bowled out for a paltry 133 in just 33.5 overs, their fifth total under 200 in as many innings this series. A freshly reshuffled batting order, featuring three debutants after the PCB's mid-tour shake-up that saw seven players and the head coach shown the door, once again found no answers. Only Saud Shakeel showed any real fight, grinding out 43 off 47 balls before the innings folded around him.

England firmly in control - Hello and a very warm welcome to all joining us for the build-up to this Test encounter, where Day 2 of the third and final Test against Pakistan gets underway with England holding all the aces. The series is already wrapped up 2-0, and this final chapter of a turbulent tour has turned into something closer to a procession than a contest.

... DAY 2, FIRST SESSION ...

Agendas set for the next day - England have won all three sessions of the opening day of this final Test and look in a very strong position to mount an unassailable lead. With Harry Brook unbeaten on 52, his excellent record against Pakistan continues to grow. However, England still lead by a mere 23 runs and Pakistan will be aiming to get rid of Brook quickly in the morning session to give themselves a real chance to prevent this from swelling into triple digits. Day 2 begins on Thursday, 10th September, and the first ball is scheduled to be bowled at 10 am GMT. The hosts seize control - England’s collapse to 39 for 3 briefly brought Pakistan back into the contest, with young seamer Razaullah making an instant impression by dismissing Joe Root in his first over as a Test cricketer. However, Harry Brook joined Emilio Gay to add a flawless 104 runs, a decisive partnership in the context of this low-scoring series. Mohammad Abbas was excellent once again, who kept testing Brook's defence late in the day, while Razaullah also impressed with the ball, going on to pick Gay's wicket, who scored a very fluent half-century in an attempt to cement his place in the Test side. Apart from Shakeel’s contribution with the bat, the efforts of Abbas and Razaullah were Pakistan’s only bright spots on an otherwise disappointing day.

Bowlers' day out - The second session saw Pakistan bundled out for a paltry 133, despite a spot of resistance from Abbas and Ali, whose 26-run stand was as good as it got for the tourists. The troika of Tongue, Archer and Robinson simply proved too hot to handle in the end, exposing Pakistan's batting frailties for the fourth or fifth time over this series. Walking out to bat themselves, though, England's top order threw up its own familiar concerns, with Duckett and Cox both failing to hang around for long. Ali and Abbas, to their credit, bowled a tidy spell, extracting a touch of help off a pitch that's slowed up a shade. Even so, England had already whittled the deficit down below three figures with plenty of wickets still in the bank.

Not a great spectacle - Root won a crucial toss. But truth be told, England's seamers barely had to break a sweat to leave Pakistan 100/7 inside the morning session, and that's precisely what makes this so damning. The pitch offered little in the way of genuine menace. This was less a bowling masterclass and more a batting unit imploding of its own accord, brittle and short on conviction from the very first ball. Only Saud Shakeel stood apart, counter-punching his way through exquisite strokes, while wickets fell in a heap around him. England's pace quartet troubled the tourists as they kept chipping away in a morning that exposed Pakistan's batting flaws against quality bowling once more.

5.38 pm GMT - A highly absorbing day of Test cricket at Edgbaston, where as many as 14 wickets fell, with the bowlers having their fair say. England, though, have emerged with their noses firmly in front and a strong base to bat Pakistan out of the contest. While the pitch did not resemble a minefield, it offered enough assistance for seamers, with the cloud cover helping the quicks generate enough movement and nip off the surface.

Since Brook's arrival at the crease, though, the runs have come rather freely for England with Gay also playing some fluent strokes for his 37 so far. They have added 69 runs in the session in 15 overs. The hosts trail by 29 runs and, with more than an hour's play remaining, look well placed to move into the lead. They would be content to finish the day ahead by, say, 50-60 runs. Pakistan, meanwhile, will be desperate to break this frustrating stand and grab at least two or three wickets before stumps if they are to stand any chance in this game. With that said, Razaullah (7-1-33-1) is back into the attack, replacing Mohammad Ali.

Aiming for a big lead - With those overcast skies sticking around, though, Abbas and Ali made their own mark with the ball too, each striking once. Duckett's underwhelming series ground on with little to show, while Cox was undone by one that jagged back in sharply, a long way indeed, to trap him plumb in front. Root and Gay have both weathered a few testing deliveries already and will walk back out looking to chip away at this deficit and push England into the lead. The final session is set to get underway at 3 pm GMT. Join us then.

Had no answers - Pakistan were tottering at 100 for 7 at Lunch, though Mohammad Abbas and Mohammad Ali did dig in for a spirited little partnership that hinted at some resistance, only for Tongue to snap it with a burst of brilliance that eventually earned him a four-wicket haul, well backed by three-fors from both Archer and Robinson. All told, it left Pakistan bowled out for 133, laying out an absolute feast for England to help themselves to.

2.42 pm GMT - Tea on Day 1! Another session, another one bossed by England. So far, though, it's really been the bowlers ruling the roost on what is still a fairly good batting surface, one with just enough nip and bounce to keep things interesting. Under 44 overs into this first day, and already 12 wickets have tumbled. As far as this particular session is concerned, only 20.5 overs were bowled, yielding 68 runs while five wickets went down.

But this looks pretty straight and Ball Tracking confirms it. The ball is projected to crash into the middle and leg stumps. Three reds and Cox is gone. England lose the review and are 24/2, trailing by 109 runs.

The keeper, Ghazi Ghori, calls for the helmet and is up to the stumps now.

Length delivery on off, and Cox shuffles across his stumps, goes for the flick, and misses entirely, with the ball squirting off his pads into the leg side. He weighs up a single but sends it back. Ghazi Ghori swoops in and has a shy at the bowler's end, but drags his throw wide of the stumps, and with backing up nowhere near good enough, the ball scoots away for four overthrows. Abbas isn't hiding his frustration with his keeper one bit.

The hosts may have dominated the series overall, but their opening partnership woes continue in this series. Jordan Cox walks in at number 3.

3.6: Mohammad Ali to Ben Duckett, OUT! CAUGHT BY BABAR! Much-needed early breakthrough for Pakistan. Ali is absolutely pumped up and one can spot the delight on Babar's face as well. Full in length and outside the off stump. It lands and nips away just a bit from the surface. Ben Duckett is drawn forward and tries to hammer it through covers, but gets a fat outside edge towards second slip. Babar Azam stays nice and low and takes a good catch while tumbling on his back. Ben Duckett's underwhelming run in this series continues as he is yet to get out of the 20s. England are 12/1, trailing by 121 runs.

3.5: Mohammad Ali to Ben Duckett, FOUR! Far more convincing from Duckett. Short of a length, no threatening pace at all on the ball, outside off. Enough time and width on offer for Duckett as he camps back and flays it behind backward point for a cracking boundary.
