India vs Brazil: 2,500 cops deployed, central forces on reserve for historic Kolkata clash
West Bengal has stepped up security for the India-Brazil friendly in Kolkata on October 3, with 2,500 police personnel, 20 IPS officers and central forces kept on reserve.

West Bengal is leaving little to chance ahead of the India vs Brazil friendly in Kolkata on October 3, with a massive security operation being put in place for the arrival of one of world football's most star-studded teams. The match at the Salt Lake Stadium is expected to draw a huge crowd.
West Bengal DGP Siddh Nath Gupta outlined the scale of the arrangements, with around 2,500 police personnel being deployed for the fixture. Twenty IPS officers will also be involved, while central forces have been kept on reserve as authorities prepare for a high-profile night featuring several of Brazil's biggest names.
The match comes less than a year after Kolkata witnessed chaos during Lionel Messi's visit to the same stadium. Messi, along with Inter Miami teammates Luis Suarez and Rodrigo De Paul, arrived in the city in December 2025 as part of the GOAT India Tour, with thousands of fans gathering at the venue hoping to see the Argentina great.
What followed became one of the most controversial sporting events the city had hosted. Messi spent only around 15 minutes on the pitch before leaving amid security concerns after being surrounded by VIPs and selfie-seekers. Angry spectators subsequently entered the field, while seats, barricades, banners and other stadium infrastructure were damaged, forcing police to intervene. Several policemen were injured during the unrest.
Now, with Brazil bringing Vinicius Junior, Marquinhos, Bruno Guimaraes and Endrick to Kolkata, the authorities are taking a markedly cautious approach. The match will also be the first senior international meeting between India and Brazil, adding another layer to an already enormous occasion.
SECURITY PLAN LEAVES LITTLE ROOM
The scale of the deployment reflects the attention surrounding the fixture. Alongside the 2,500 police personnel, around 200 officers of various ranks and 20 IPS officers are expected to be involved in the operation, while central forces remain available if required. A three-tier security arrangement has also been planned at the stadium.
The authorities have also introduced numbered seating for spectators at the venue for the first time, with fans required to occupy the seats assigned to them. Entry will begin two hours before kick-off, with security checks forming a key part of the matchday operation.
A DIFFERENT GOVERNMENT, DIFFERENT APPROACH
The preparations come under a new West Bengal administration. The BJP formed the state government for the first time after winning the 2026 Assembly election, with Suvendu Adhikari taking oath as chief minister on May 9 after succeeding Mamata Banerjee, whose Trinamool Congress had governed the state since 2011.
The Brazil fixture therefore arrives in a different political and administrative setting from Messi's visit.
With the memory of the Salt Lake Stadium chaos still fresh, the state police and administration have put a substantial security structure in place for a Brazil squad featuring some of the biggest stars in world football.
