Leave my family alone, or I'm gone: Jurgen Klopp's stern warning as Germany boss

Jurgen Klopp has warned he will walk away from his role as Germany head coach if the media intrudes on his family's private life, delivering a strong message during his first press conference since taking charge of the national team. The former Liverpool manager said protecting his family was a non-negotiable condition as he begins a new chapter with Germany.

Klopp was unveiled as Germany's new head coach on Friday after signing a contract until the 2030 FIFA World Cup, replacing Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following the country's disappointing exit from the 2026 World Cup.

Addressing reporters at his unveiling, Klopp said he accepted the job despite witnessing the criticism directed at Nagelsmann and England boss Thomas Tuchel, but made it clear there was a line that should never be crossed.

"If you behave badly and don't leave my family in peace then I'll be gone, I'll just turn away," Klopp said.

The 59-year-old stressed that criticism of his work was part of the profession but insisted his family must remain out of the spotlight.

"I'm taking this job even though I've seen how you've treated Julian Nagelsmann. I'm taking it even though I've seen how you've treated Thomas Tuchel. If you go after my family, I'm gone. If you think I'm rubbish, tell me to my face and I'll leave immediately, without asking for any compensation."

Klopp also described the Germany job as the pinnacle of his coaching career and vowed to give everything to restore the national team's fortunes.

"The national team brings us Germans together like almost nothing else can. That's what makes this task so special for me."

KLOPP READY FOR BIGGEST CHALLENGE

After stepping away from Liverpool in 2024 because of exhaustion, Klopp said he now feels refreshed and believes the timing is right for his first venture into international management. He admitted becoming Germany coach once seemed unimaginable but gradually accepted that the opportunity would eventually arrive.

Calling the appointment the highest point of his coaching journey, Klopp insisted he has no plans beyond the national team and intends to devote himself fully to the role. His contract runs through the 2030 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

FOCUS SHIFTS TO GERMANY REBUILD

Klopp inherits a Germany side searching for answers after another disappointing World Cup campaign that ended with a shock defeat to Paraguay in the Round of 32. The result extended the four-time world champions' struggles on the biggest stage and led to Nagelsmann's resignation.

The former Liverpool manager's first assignment will come in the UEFA Nations League, where Germany face the Netherlands on September 24. Alongside trusted assistants Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, Klopp now begins the task of rebuilding one of international football's most successful nations ahead of the 2030 World Cup.
