Located to the northeast of Mumbai, Bhiwandi is a city in the Thane district of the Konkan division of Maharashtra, India. Historically, Bhiwandi was inhabited by the Koli and Konkani people. Having the second-largest power loom, Bhiwandi is also among Asia's biggest warehousing hubs as it has some of the biggest godowns in India. In addition to this, the city also has a spice port on the Kamwadi River (now Bunder Mohalla).
Marathi is the official language spoken in the city. Culture followed in Bhiwandi is a mixture of Maharashtra, UP and Bihar. Ganesh Puja, Sakranti, Eid, Bakrid, all festivals are celebrated with great pomp and show in the city. Three people and a total of twelve people were rescued after a two-storey godown collapsed on Saturday in Bhiwandi, located in the Thane district of Maharashtra. The collapse has left around ten people, who were living and working on the premises, trapped under the debris, according to a civic official. Local residents immediately called the fire brigade and the regional disaster management cell.
