Gaurav Gogoi was born in 1982 to former Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, and is married to UK-born Elizabeth Colebourn. He graduated from the prestigious St. Columba’s School in New Delhi and completed his B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Indraprastha University, Delhi before doing a master's of public administration from New York University.
Gogoi left his job at Airtel to join the Delhi-based NGO called Pravah in 2005, nine years later in 2014, he joined the Indian National Congress. In the 2014 elections itself, he won by a total of 443,315 votes, defeating his rival by a solid margin of 93000 votes.
Gogi has been representing the Kaliabor constituency in the Lok sabha since 2014 and currently serves as the deputy leader of the Indian National Congress in the Lok Sabha since 2020. He played a significant role in leading a no-confidence motion against Bharatiya Janata Party in 2023. Gogoi comes from an influential family with links to all kinds of histories, he is related to Film Producer Paran Barbarooah and film Director Prerana Barbarooah. He is the grandson of Poet Ganesh Gogoi and is also related to politician Dip Gogoi.
