Jagat Prakash Nadda, popularly known as JP Nadda, is an Indian politician serving as the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers in the Narendra Modi-led government. A senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he served as the party's national president from 2020 to 2024 and currently represents Gujarat in the Rajya Sabha.
Born on December 2, 1960, Nadda received his early education at St. Xavier's School in Patna. He graduated from Patna College under Patna University before earning a law degree from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. His political journey began with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), where he emerged as a prominent student leader during the Jai Prakash Narayan movement. He later became president of the Himachal Pradesh University Students' Central Association and went on to hold several key positions within the ABVP.
Nadda joined the BJP in 1990 and steadily rose through the party ranks. He was elected MLA from Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh multiple times and served in several ministerial portfolios, including Health, Parliamentary Affairs, Forest, Environment, Science and Technology, and Law. In 2010, he was appointed BJP national general secretary and later became a Rajya Sabha member.
As Union Health Minister between 2014 and 2019, Nadda played a key role in launching Ayushman Bharat, expanding Jan Aushadhi Kendras and promoting healthcare reforms. He took over as BJP national president in January 2020, overseeing the party through major Assembly and local body elections, organisational expansion and the Covid pandemic. Following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he returned to the Union Cabinet as Health Minister and also
assumed charge of the Chemicals and Fertilizers Ministry.
