Perched atop the Sahyadri hills near Lonavala in Maharashtra, Lohagad Fort is one of India's best-preserved hill forts and among the state's most popular trekking destinations. Rising about 1,033 metres (3,389 feet) above sea level, the centuries-old fortress combines history, adventure and breathtaking natural beauty, attracting thousands of visitors throughout the year.
The name Lohagad, meaning "Iron Fort", reflects its reputation for strength and resilience. Over the centuries, the fort changed hands several times, passing through the rule of the Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Bahamanis, Mughals and Marathas. It gained particular prominence under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who captured it in 1648, briefly lost it to the Mughals under the Treaty of Purandar, and reclaimed it in 1670 to store the wealth brought from the Surat campaign.
Today, Lohagad is famous for its iconic Vinchu Kata (Scorpion's Tail), a spectacular fortified ridge that offers panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. During the monsoon, mist-covered hills, waterfalls and lush greenery transform the fort into one of Maharashtra's most scenic trekking spots.
Beyond its military legacy, Lohagad also holds archaeological significance. A Jain Brahmi inscription dating back to the 2nd or 1st century BC, discovered in a cave on the fort in 2019, points to its much older historical roots. Blending heritage, nature and local folklore, Lohagad Fort continues to fascinate history enthusiasts, trekkers and photographers alike.

Pune Rural Police have arrested a classmate of prime accused Chetan Chaudhary in connection with the Chetan Agarwal murder case at Lohagad Fort. According to police sources, Chaudhary and his girlfriend Siya Goyal discussed the murder plan and its execution with the classmate prior to the crime on 18 June. Although he declined requests to accompany them to Lohagad, police suspect he had prior knowledge of the conspiracy. Traced through Chaudhary's phone records and electronic chats, the accused, originally from Beed district and working in Balewadi, is being questioned regarding his involvement in the conspiracy.
