Punjab

Often referred as the heart of India’s Sikh community, Punjab is an Indian state which is located in Northern India. Covering an area of 50,362 sq km, it is the 20th largest Indian state. Punjab comprises 23 districts and is also the 16th largest state by population. Talking about its history, Punjabi civilisation is a result of migration (at the time of the Partition) leading to an amalgamation of different tribes of people with different ideas and cultures. Following the religious violence and partition of India in 1947, undivided Punjab was spilt into West Punjab and East Punjab on a religious basis. It was on November 1, 1966, when a new integrated and enlarged Indian state, Punjab came into existence under the Punjab Reorganisation Act (1996). The state is bordered by a province of Pakistan to the west, Jammu and Kashmir to the north, Haryana and Rajasthan to the south and Himachal Pradesh to the northeast. Punjabi (widely spoken), written in the Gurumukhi script is the official language of the state. Union territory, Chandigarh is the state’s capital and three of five tributary rivers of the Indus River i.e., Sutlej, Beas and Ravi are the major rivers that flow through Punjab.

Punjab is home to many tourist attractions including Jallianwala Bagh, Wagah Border, the Golden Temple and Harmandir Sahib. Interestingly, Punjab has a loud, vibrant and rich culture amongst all the other states of India. Men wearing traditional Punjabi Kurta and Tehmat along with Pagri while women wearing Patiala suit salwar perform the worldwide famous, Bhangra and Giddha (folk dances) which depicts the rich folklore of Punjab. Known as the "Granary of India" or "India's bread-basket", the state also offers a diverse range in its cuisine. Dishes like ‘Makki di roti’, ‘Sarson da Saag’, ‘Amritsari Kulchha’, ‘Shami Kebab’, ‘Tandoori chicken’ are some of the specialties of the state.

Delhi Air Pollution: No PUC No Fuel Rule Enforced, Camera Scans Rolled Out

Authorities in Delhi NCR have initiated measures to combat winter pollution, enforcing a strict rule denying petrol, diesel, and CNG to vehicles without a valid Pollution Under Control certificate. Automated camera systems linked to the Parivahan portal have been deployed across nearly 500 petrol pumps in the national capital to detect expired certificates and announce non-compliant vehicles. Motorists failing to renew their certificates face fines of up to ten thousand rupees. The broader anti-pollution initiative also targets old vehicles, tightens regulations on interstate vehicular movement, mandates cleaner bus fuels, and plans the phase-out of diesel autos. Additionally, steps are underway to curb stubble burning across Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, along with increased mechanical road sweeping and camera-based traffic congestion monitoring. While residents acknowledge the necessity of strict curbs ahead of worsening air quality, on-ground challenges persist as some fuel station managers report awaiting official circulars while offering testing camps.
