Bhaigiri nahi, zimmedaari: Thar, Fortuner owners take road-safety pledge in Daman

Hundreds of Thar and Fortuner owners gathered in Daman for a road-safety event with a simple message: “Bhaigiri nahi, zimmedaari (Not show of power, but responsibility).” The event urged drivers of the big, powerful SUVs to pledge to drive responsibly.

During the road-safety campaign organised on September 9, District Collector of Daman Saurabh Mishra administered the pledge to the SUV owners. The Department of Information and Publicity of Daman shared a video of the event on its official X account.

The “Thar-Fortuner Sankalp Yatra” saw hundreds of Mahindra Thar and Toyota Fortuner SUVs gather at a parking area, with participants assembling in groups and holding yellow placards as part of the awareness campaign.

The campaign centred around slogans such as “Not speed, but culture” and “Not show-off, but responsibility,” urging owners to associate their vehicles with responsible driving rather than rashness or displaying the power of their SUVs.

The initiative also tied into Mahindra’s #TharKaMatlabZimmedari road-safety campaign, with Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra tagged in the post.

The sight of a huge gathering of Thar and Fortuner owners specifically coming together to promote road safety prompted plenty of discussion online.

Some users suggested that technology could be used to monitor traffic violations and that vehicles should be seized when drivers repeatedly broke rules such as driving on footpaths, going on the wrong side or making dangerous turns.

Others said stricter enforcement of driving licence requirements and tougher penalties could address many of the problems associated with reckless driving.

Another section of the comments argued that authorities should consistently enforce the Motor Vehicles Act and punish traffic violations according to the law, saying this would discourage motorists from driving rashly.

For an SUV community often discussed online in the context of driving behaviour, the Sankalp Yatra offered a rather direct message: owning a powerful vehicle was supposed to come with an equally strong sense of responsibility.
