A woman shared how her Gen Z cousin and colleagues found their own way of pushing back against toxic workplace culture, from leaving the office on time together to refusing to entertain after-hours work calls.

The story was shared by X user Sheetal Rijhwani, who recounted a conversation with her Gen Z cousin about how younger employees at her workplace approach office culture differently.

In her post, she claimed her cousin told her that all the Gen Z employees at the company had a separate group where they look out for one another and maintain firm workplace boundaries.

According to the post, the group made it a point to leave the office together at the end of the workday instead of staying back simply to impress managers. They also avoided answering work-related calls or messages on weekends, believing personal time should remain personal.

The woman then wrote about how if a manager behaved inappropriately, the employees reported the matter to HR without hesitation. She added that, according to her cousin, HR sided with the employees and reprimanded the manager rather than the other way around.

Sharing one incident that amused her, she said the office air conditioning stopped working one day. Instead of continuing to work in uncomfortable conditions, the entire Gen Z group walked to a nearby cafe, informed HR that they would return once the AC was fixed, and waited there until the issue was resolved.

Curious whether this attitude was common across generations, she asked her cousin if everyone in the group belonged to Gen Z.

Her cousin allegedly replied that they did, adding, "Millennials don't have the courage to do this. You've got used to staying quiet and putting up with everything."

The post ended with the words, "Emotional damage," jokingly acknowledging the generational jab.

The post sparked a discussion online, with many users weighing in on changing attitudes towards workplace culture.

One user said they spend a lot of time around Gen Z employees and have noticed that the younger generation approaches workplace and social issues very differently.

Another commenter, identifying as part of Generation X, said they were glad to see the change, adding that their generation had lived through the shift from secure jobs to contract-based employment and adapted until they no longer could.

A third user argued that many millennials are caught in an awkward position at work, saying they are often considered too young to be taken seriously by senior leaders while also being too old to benefit from being viewed as fresh talent.
