Missing Delhi toddler found dead, neighbour arrested after encounter

Delhi Police arrested a 37-year-old neighbour after a raid in Kapashera turned into an encounter. Investigators are now working to establish the motive and sequence of events in the child's killing.

A 37-year-old man was arrested following a police encounter in connection with the murder of a three-year-old girl who had gone missing from southwest Delhi's Kapashera area. The accused allegedly opened fire on the police during an operation to apprehend him before being shot in the leg and taken into custody, police said.

According to Delhi Police, the child was reported missing on the evening of July 10, following which an FIR was registered at Kapashera Police Station under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and an investigation was launched.

During the intervening night of July 14 and 15, police received information about the recovery of a child's body from the Kapashera drain near FIMT College. The body was identified as that of the missing girl. A crime team inspected the spot, and the post-mortem examination confirmed that the child had been murdered and her body had been disposed of in the drain.

Investigators analysed CCTV footage from the area, which led them to identify Chandan Kumar (37), a native of Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh, as a suspect after his movements were found to be suspicious.

POLICE RECOVERED PISTOL, CARTRIDGE

On July 15, police conducted a raid at his hideout in Kapashera village. According to officials, Kumar allegedly opened fire when the police attempted to arrest him. In response, the police fired a single round in the exercise of the right of private defence and to effect his arrest, injuring him in the left leg. He was subsequently overpowered and arrested.

Police recovered a country-made pistol and a cartridge of bullets from the accused's possession.

During preliminary interrogation, Kumar allegedly confessed to killing the three-year-old girl. Further investigation revealed that he was living in the same building as the victim and was her neighbour.

The accused, who works as a tailor, is married. However, his wife and five-year-old son live in his native village in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, while he had been residing alone in Kapashera.

Following his arrest, Kumar was shifted to a hospital for medical treatment.

Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain the motive behind the murder. Officials added that legal proceedings have been initiated and efforts are continuing to establish the sequence of events leading to the child's death.
