According to residents, the pit had been dug several days ago for boring work by the Greater Noida Authority. Following recent rainfall, it filled with water, but no barricades or warning signs were installed around the site to prevent accidents.
Children playing nearby raised an alarm after the victim fell into the pit. Residents rushed to the spot and pulled him out after a frantic rescue effort before taking him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The incident has sparked anger among locals, who accused the Greater Noida Authority and the contractor of gross negligence. Residents alleged that despite repeated concerns over open excavation sites, basic safety measures were ignored, turning the construction pit into a death trap.
Following the death, sub-divisional magistrate Ashutosh Gupta reached the spot and said that the administration learnt about the incident through social media and immediately responded.
"People in the society informed us that children were playing in the area and there was no barricading around the pit. The contractor is responsible for the child's death, and legal action will be initiated against him," the SDM said.
Residents also questioned why safety protocols were not enforced despite previous fatal incidents involving open pits in Greater Noida. They demanded immediate barricading of all excavation sites and strict accountability for officials and contractors responsible for public safety.
