Uttar Pradesh has directed medical and dental colleges to set up special monitoring cells over alleged conversion-related incidents.

A new monitoring framework is set to be introduced across Uttar Pradesh's medical and dental colleges after Governor and Chancellor Anandiben Patel directed institutions to establish special cells aimed at preventing incidents related to religious conversion.

The directive comes in the wake of concerns over alleged religious conversion cases linked to King George's Medical University (KGMU) and Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow.

Authorities have described the move as a preventive and awareness-focused measure designed to strengthen oversight within educational institutions.

A NEW WATCH SYSTEM

Following the Governor's instructions, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University has issued orders to all affiliated medical and dental colleges across the state. Institutions have been asked to constitute dedicated cells and submit details regarding their formation at the earliest.

The initiative has been launched based on a communication from Dr Sudhir M Bobde, Special Officer on Duty to the Chancellor, and directions issued by Vice-Chancellor Dr Amit Devgan.

Officials say the proposed cells will function as monitoring bodies within campuses and keep watch for any suspicious activity that may be reported by students, resident doctors or staff members.

BEYOND MONITORING

The colleges have also been instructed to conduct awareness programmes regarding legal provisions, rights and responsibilities. Authorities believe that awareness campaigns can help students better understand existing laws and institutional procedures.

Apart from monitoring, the cells are expected to act as a point of contact for complaints and concerns. Any grievance received will be examined, and action will be taken according to applicable rules and regulations.

PART OF A LARGER PUSH

The development comes amid a broader focus by the Uttar Pradesh government on monitoring alleged unlawful religious conversion activities in educational institutions.

Earlier, the state government had also moved towards setting up anti-radicalisation and monitoring mechanisms in universities and higher educational institutions following concerns over conversion-related allegations.

Officials maintain that the latest initiative is intended to strengthen vigilance and ensure that campuses remain safe and compliant with existing laws.

With instructions now issued to affiliated colleges, the process of establishing the special cells has begun. The effectiveness of the mechanism will likely be assessed in the coming months as institutions implement the Governor's directive and roll out awareness and monitoring activities across campuses.
