Actors Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt appeared as Ted Lasso and Coach Beard, respectively, from the American sports comedy show at the FIFA World Cup Final halftime show. The duo joined the tournament’s first-ever final halftime line-up in character.
Sudeikis and Hunt's cameo formed part of an 11-minute line-up that also featured Justin Bieber, Madonna, BTS, Coldplay, Shakira and Burna Boy.
During the segment, Sudeikis’s Ted Lasso offered words of encouragement to Bieber before the singer walked on to the pitch with an acoustic guitar to perform his Swag II track Everything Hallelujah. The appearance came a few weeks before Ted Lasso is set to return for season four on August 5.
Introducing Bieber’s moment, Sudeikis, as Ted Lasso, said to Hunt’s Coach Beard: "I think we need some heart, someone that has some soul, someone that can bring the love.” Bieber then joined the two actors, holding his acoustic guitar, before Ted interacted with him.
While speaking to Bieber, Sudeikis said, “Alright, young man, it’s your big shot. Now listen to me. Go out there, don’t be nervous. Nobody’s watching. Make us proud.”
Bieber then took to the pitch alone to perform Everything Hallelujah in a more low-key moment within what was otherwise a much more grandiose affair. The Ted Lasso appearance was one of several surprises in the packed halftime production.
Madonna opened the show with a pre-recorded segment in which she rode in a dune buggy driven by Brazilian footballers Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. The muppets performed Seven Nation Army with an orchestra conducted by Gustavo Dudamel.
BTS, coming off a Paris stadium show the previous night, performed their 2020 hit Dynamite, while Coldplay and the muppets joined the PS22 choir, a children’s chorus from Staten Island.
Another major moment in the show came from Shakira and Burna Boy, who performed Dai Dai, the tournament’s official song.
Ahead of Sudeikis and Hunt’s appearance, a week ago, Ted Lasso actor Cristo Fernandez made his US professional football debut for El Paso Locomotive FC in a 2-0 home defeat to New Mexico United.
Fernndez portrayed the cheerful Mexican forward Dani Rojas in the Apple TV+ series, appearing in recurring roles in Seasons 1 and 2 and in Season 3. In Ted Lasso, Dani Rojas joins midway through the first season after recovering from an injury, while Fernndez stepped on to the pitch in real life before a crowd of more than 5,000 fans on Saturday.
With the storyline of Ted Lasso Season 4 focused on a women’s team, Fernndez and some of his on-screen teammates could make guest appearances.
