The Bengali television show Kamala Nibas has sparked strong reactions online after a scene showed its male lead eating a cockroach, with several viewers saying it gave them deja vu of a moment involving Karanvir Bohra’s Viraj Dobriyal in the Hindi show Dil Se Di Dua... Saubhagyavati Bhava. The Zee Bangla show, starring Dhruba Jyoti Sarkar and Sanghati Banerjee, came under backlash after the episode aired.

From political satire to television drama, the cockroach has increasingly found itself at the centre of viral conversations. Recently, Cockroach Janta Party has turned the insect into symbol of Gen Z frustration against governance, further cementing its strange pop culture relevance.

Viewers reacted sharply to the scene, which was also shared by Zee Bangla on its official Instagram account. Many said the moment was included for shock value, while others drew direct comparisons with Saubhagyavati Bhava, the 2011 Hindi show that had earlier gone viral on social media.

In the Kamala Nibas episode, the groom arrives home with his wife, and the two are shown speaking to each other on their first night together. During the conversation, a cockroach bites the wife. Angry that it disturbed them and came in between their romantic moment, the husband catches the cockroach with his bare hands, dips it in a glass of milk, and eats it, leaving his wife shocked.

The scene quickly prompted reactions across social media. One comment read, “Cockroach X oreo biscuit (tick mark)”. Another user wrote, “What is even happening in shows nowadays? How is this making sense?” A third said, “Are they really eating cockroaches to show their love? Should I laugh or should I cry?” Another comment read, “Everything was perfect except the cockroach scene,” while one user quipped, “Viraj Dobriyal did it better.”

Several viewers said the sequence reminded them of Dil Se Di Dua... Saubhagyavati Bhava, where Karanvir Bohra’s character Viraj Dobriyal was shown drinking a glass of milk with a cockroach in it. In that scene, Viraj and his wife Jhanvi, played by Sriti Jha, are talking as a cockroach lands on her shoulder. She moves away, and when Viraj tries to kill it, Jhanvi stops him. He then picks up the cockroach, drops it into a glass of milk and drinks it, after which Jhanvi faints. That clip of the 2011 show went viral in 2021.
